Late Rumor: iPhone 4s Now, iPhone 5 in Summer of 2012 | The iPhone 5 News Blog
Find us on Google+

This week a gaggle of mainstream tech and finance journals and blogs have been riffing on a note to clients by Jefferies & Co. banking sector market analyst and tech-sector watcher Peter Misek Analyst entitled “One to Rule Them All: iOS and OS X Roadmaps to Merge.”

The main thrust of Misek’s screed is what he contends is an Apple strategy To Merge the iOS with OS X into a single platform for supporting apps and cloud services in 2012 concurrent with the projected release of quad-core, 64-Bit ARM A6 processor silicon that will be used not only in iPads and iPhones, but also Apple’s Macs — with the MacBook Air first up.

Misek’s timeline for the A6 rollout would see the new in-house designed CPU debuting in the iPad 3 during Q1 2012, and the A6 powered iPhone 5 next summer (or at WWDC?), and the the Macbook Air switching to A6 processors in the second half of 2012, or in early 2013, and with the iOS and Mac OS X merger into one operating system finally consummated by 2016. He thinks that 64-bit ARM architecture will be key for Apple to complete an operating system merger, which is plausible given that OS X 10.7 Lion is already 64-bit only. On the other hand, currently iPhones and iPads run on 32-bit ARM chips while Apple’s Mac PCs run on Intel x86 processors.

However, the report says “Apple is ready to start sampling the A6 quad-core app processor and will be the first such multi-device platform capable of PC-like strength,” so the wheels of this transition appear to be in motion.

In the meantime, Misek belongs to the school of thought that the new iPhone product that’s being ramped up for release in the late summer or the fall will be an A5 powered iPhone 4S.

Now, this constellation of predictions would be easy to dismiss if they were coming from some fly-by-night smalltime blog, but coming from a respected analyst at a well established and reputable firm like Jefferies & Co., one is obliged to take notice and give it careful consideration.

Personally, I find the prediction that Apple is fixing to merge the IOS with OS X completely plausible, and in fact I began predicting that Apple would eventually do so early last year, after the astonishing success of the iPad and iPad 2. However, the idea that Apple would actually wait until next summer to release an iPhone 5 is pretty hard to swallow, and based on fan sentiment vigorously expressed on this blog and elsewhere, the company would be risking a lot of backlash if all it’s released over the next couple of months turns out to be a tarted up iPhone 4 with a P5 processor, a somewhat larger display, an 8 megapixel camera and a few other tweaks.

Likely to be better-received is a report from Digitimes’ Monica Chen and Adam Hwang that Taiwan’s Pegatron Technology has landed orders for 10 million units of iPhone 5 to become Apple second iPhone subcontractor, with shipments to begin in September, according to unnamed industry sources.

In other news, 9To5Mac reports that A tipster at an Orange UK store in London has let them know that the carrier has told employees the iPhone 3GS is no longer available, that according to several sources in different countries, iPhone 3GS stock has been quickly tightening with few or no shipments coming through the pipeline to some regions, and according to a source at one popular international carrier, the iPhone 3GS has disappeared from the stock database altogether, while an accurate source at a major U.S. based iPhone reseller reports that iPhone 3GS stock is significantly lower than usual. The disappearance of the iPhone 3GS would seem logical if Apple opts to keep the current specification iPhone 4 in production as its entry-level handset after the new mainstream iPhone offering is revealed, whatever it turns out to be called.

  1. JustinQ Says:

Android is getting far ahead of apple in terms of hardware features. The new phones are really creative. I think making a minor update to the iphone 4 would be a huge mistake. Everyone seems to think that apple HAS to go by this “tick tock” pattern of minor update then major update. Apple does not have to do this. Also the iphone 4S was never meant to be a consumer product. The 4S was an iPhone 4 with an A5 that was made only for developers, so that they could get used to developing iPhone games with more power.

I think the best thing for apple to do would be to release the iPhone 5 with many new and revolutionary features that put it miles ahead of the new android phones. Then next year release an iPhone 6 whith the A6 and minor changes. In other words, I think apple should break the pattern and make the iPhone 5 be a HUGE update and make the iPhone 6 be the minor update.

I was just thinking about it, and even though I have a 3G, I will be very disappointed if the new iPhone looks like the iPhone 4 as the 3GS looked like the 3G. Having the same size screen is a major problem for me…

If the next does not have a bigger screen and 4G, I will definitely consider the Galaxy S2!

This is all killing me. I have been waiting to get an iPhone for the past 2 years. Two years ago, I would’ve bought an iPhone regardless of the other phones on the market. I’ve had a stupid feature phone this whole time (I’ve been waiting on my contract with ATT which has been up for 3 months) and I cannot bear the fact that I may have waited for a disappointing update. I think Apple’s ecosystem and design is 100x better than Android’s-but if they cannot keep an up to date product they will lose my respect! Maybe when OS X converges with iOS I will be bought back in, but as for this year, it’s all up to how good the next iPhone will be in determining whether I run to Android!

Wow. Great piece by Mr. Moore as usual. That being said – and I think we’ve said it ad naseum here already , there will be a large segment of iPhone users who will be angered by this news. Again, if you’re an iPhone 3gs user and the next iPhone that comes out is a refreshed 4s – and you are still committed to the Apple brand – why would you buy the 4s at full price when you can still run iOS 5 and iCloud on the 4, at a great discount?

I wonder if Apple is planning around the typical 2 year contract lifecycle of most carriers.

Verizon allows on most phones a 1 year contract if you pay aprox 1/3 more for the phone up front, but not available for the iPhone.

You are right, Michael. I am a 3gs user and if the screen is no bigger on the 4s, then I will just buy the discounted 4. I was playing with my sister’s iphone 4 and the clarity of the screen was amazing as was the speed!

So we are back into the iPhone 4S silly season

    1) Apple is not going to call the next phone 4s, it would be a marketing disaster it will be called the iPhone 5

    2) It will almost certainly look different to the iPhone 4 and I don’t just mean a bigger screen, with Apple image is everything and new iPhone needs new design.
The only reason they stuck with the cheapy looking shell originally designed for the iPod was because it was a practical design and other than Blackberry there were no other smart phones and people knew the iPod design so it made sense to stick with that.
When the iPhone 4 came out it was like the iPhone was finally was a product in its own right because it wasn’t an iPod you could use for making phone calls and it looked stylish.

The iPhone 4 came out over a year ago now and people are expecting something new not a revamped iPhone 4 which is what it will look like if they don’t change the design of the case completely and if they keep the iPhone 4 as their dummed down entry level one they will want the 5 to look different to distinguish between the 2 designs.

    3) Of course Apple are working on the A6 and many other processors as soon as the iPhone 5 hits the shelves Apple are going to get working on the iPhone 6.
Just because they are working on an A6 doesn’t mean iPhone 4S this year and iPhone 5 with A6 chip next year.

I really thought we had all finally agreed that there was not going to be a 4S but it seems the silly season is upon us again but at least we don’t have to wait much more than a month to find out the facts.

    Hi Guys;

Just reportin’ the news. Note that I said in the blog entry that the idea that Apple would actually wait until next summer to release an iPhone 5 is pretty hard to swallow.

However, Mr. Misek is a respected analyst, and while that doen’t mean he’s incapable of being mistaken, presumably he’s basing his iPhone 4S for the fall prediction on something more than a private opinion guess. Personally, I think Apple would be ill-advised to not release an iPhone 5 in Sept./Oct., but nothing they do really surprises me any more.

  10. Tony Says:

I am hoping it’s a new product not a refresh. I would certainly snap up a discounted i4 if it’s just minor tweaks. I would probably jump for a bigger screen. No reason to think apple couldn’t make two completely new phones released 6 months apart however. They likely have separate devlopment teams working concurrently on both items, and given this release is so close, may have formed the iPhone 7 development team. The development cycles on these products is likely pretty long.

I think it would be a HUGE gamble for Apple to offer a refresh on the iphone 4 hardware, at the risk of underperforming analyst expectations.

Is there any rumor on a likely announcement date? Are there any major conferences we should be eyeing as potential announcement venues?

I really doubt they’re going to call hte next iPhone the 4S, I thought that was just the beta phones they sent out to developers to test apps with? Also, people already thing the iPhone 4 means it has 4G so if this one is called the 4S, people are going to get the phones mixed up. This is the 5th iPhone to come out, so it’s the iPhone 5. 3GS worked for the 3GS because it was the THIRD iPhone released, that’s the ONLY reason really that it worked. I mean I’m sure there were people who thought the 3G was the 3rd iPhone when it was the 2nd, but it’s different for the 3GS and the 5.

If the screen is enlarged past 3.7″, it will have a sub 300ppi problem. No longer a retina screen per Apple standards.

Hey Engadget is showing a screenshot from Verizon for phones/devices coming out in the next few months but I don’t see anything listed for iPhone 5. Is this just for Android devices would you say or are they just not putting anything Apple out that employees could leak to keep up with Apple’s secrecy? Here’s the link:

    http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/04/verizon-wireless-year-end-roadmap-leaks-android-and-lte-spotted/

Although this site, Windows Phone Daily:
    http://windowsphonedaily.blogspot.com/2011/08/verizon-product-roadmap-for-september.html

says, as I guessed above, Apple is probably keeping the iPhone out of Verizon’s inventory to keep up with the secrecy.

I really hope that’s what it is, I really don’t want to wait until next year for an iPhone 5. I will NOT get an Android device.

  18. Andres Says:

I agree with some of the comments above. We need to stop thinking that the name “iPhone 5″ is some sort of goal that Apple is trying to reach and that it won’t earn unless its next phone is something really revolutionary. SpasticPat put it best, “this is the 5th iPhone to come out, so it’s the iPhone 5.” If there is a phone coming out this September, and it has a new processor and a new iOS, that’s the iPhone 5 we’ve been waiting for. It could well be a disappointment, and it could well have a name that is not explicitly “iPhone 5″, but even then, it’s the iPhone 5 we have all expected. The 2012 phone, the one with the A6, is the iPhone 6, 5.

  19. Michael Nace Says:

You know you and I are of one mind on this whole naming business, Andres, and Apple would be crazy to not call the thing “iPhone 5.” But you know, the “iPhone 5″ name is worth something — thanks in part to all of us hyping it. The big prognostication here isn’t whether Apple is going to call the next iPHone “iPhone 5″ or “iPhone 4s,” but rather, is Apple going to refresh the iPhone or re-do it.

Again, I think we’re of the same mind on this: a refresh for the iPhone would be ill-timed right now. But if for some very odd reason Apple is planning on doing just that, I could see them not wanting to “squander” the “iPhone 5″ on an iteration that doesn’t live up to its hype.

Again, the fault of apple here would be less of not naming the thing “iPhone 5,” but by choosing to punt on the next iPhone.

    Hi Michael and Tony;

Another possibility is that Apple may not be able to get the full iPhone 5 revamp ready in time for a fal launch as much as they would like to. I’m sure they didn’t want to have that nearly one-year delay in getting the white iPhone 4 to market, but the pieces just didin’t fall into place the way they had hoped.

Under those hypothetical circumstances, which would be better? – release an upgraded iPhone 4 with an A5 chip, better camera, and possibly larger display, or just keep selling iPhone 4s as they are only with iOS 5 loaded up?

  26. Michael Nace Says:

Charles, if your scenario was true, then yes, it would make more sense. But because the consuming public would never get that official backstory from Apple in a press release, it could never be perceived that way by the public. Also, even if it was explained to us, I don’t know if iPhone users would accept Apple being unable to get their revamp ready. If it’s true, then Apple’s in a tough spot.

If it looks identical to the 4 but is slightly thinner with a smaller side band, and a new aluminum back with the same s2 specs then that will be good enough for me…in other words, i don’t need a dramatic change or a bigger screen. oh yeah, and if only tethered jailbreaking is possible because of icloud and the ios5 then ill be going with the s2.

I think hysteria is setting in. I love gazing into the “crystal ball” as much as the next guy, but lets just say that Apple is one of the top ten most admired companies (Forbes), and they simply know what they are doing. I love the fan boys that say, “If it is the iPhone 4s I’m jumping ship!” but lets be serious, the iPhone is not just a product anymore but a status symbol, it is cool, and that is worth its weight in gold. Apple expects to sell 10′s of millions of the next iPhone regardless of our opinions. Yes we are the consumers, and yes we have a say, but we are also going to buy the phone in droves regardless of the specs.

The simple truth is tech geeks that care about ram, and dore-core processors and ppi (including myself) are the minority of buyers. Look around, how many moms, teens, and average joes have an iPhone simply because it is an “iPhone” ? Millions, so all of us “experts” who say it will be a disaster if it is just a refresh are seriously mistake. Apple decision makers are genius, no other word for it, and whatever the next iPhone is will sell like, well, the iPhone. Why?

Because if you don’t have an iPhone, well, you don’t have an iPhone.

I am going to buy it regardless, and so are you.

I must say that I somewhat disagree that an iPhone is some sort of status symbol. I would agree when the first one came around, it definitely was. But now that the 4 has saturated the smartphone market, a majority of the people I see have one.

Just as the average moms, teens, and average Joes do not have an understanding about ram and processors, I would think they also may not know the about the quality of the iPhone over others in the market. They’ll go by the visual appeal. And I must say that now, Android phones are looking really nice with their larger screens. These folks have no knowledge of Androids’ constant crashes or of iOS’ stability either.

I think we tend to generalize people in a way that they are ignorant about how their phones work. Maybe they do not know the tech specs, but they do understand whether or not their phone runs smoothly and is fast enough for their life style.

I think Apple has the obligation to give us a new iPhone 5, if only because of the 2 year contract cycles. Original iPhone users got a 3GS, and then now they’re ready for a new one. Besides, if the iPhone 5 is good enough, millions of iPhone 4 owners who are still within contract will buy a new one. If it is too similar, but just faster, then you all said it already… the average person does not know / care about those specs. They will wait for iPhone 6.

I think everyone wins when a brand new iPhone 5. I am sure more people would have bought a 3GS if it was a completely new iPhone and not looking identical to the 3G.

    But what do I know, I still have a 3G :]

Shark…I have to say I agree with Daniel on this one. When the iphone came out it was the best on the market and it has held that reputation in design and performance. With the Galaxy s2 and other new phones ready to hit the shelves, if the current phone gets a dual core processor and upgraded camera and ios5, but is not the thinnest, lightest or best featured overall like not being 4g or not having NFS or 1080p video or larger screen or anything else then they will have failed to be the best. we already see that just having a larger screen is not pulling people into other phones, but it is apparent with the galaxy s2 that a full packaged phone is capable of competing with apple.

  42. Darren Says:

You’re all forgetting 1 thing. The Galaxy S2 still runs Android, which is a steaming pile of manure. What does it matter if it has if it has 1,000,000 new features if you can’t use them because the damn phone has crashed…or run out of battery after 3 hours. Not to mention the fact that 2 of these new features (4G and NFS) are pretty useless as there is only a low number of 4G towers and NFS terminals.

I agree with the sentiment that regardless of the specs, the next iPhone will be a success; the only variable for me is whether or not I choose to get one or wait for 2012′s model.

It’s going to be a hard decision for me. That Galaxy that is 5mm thinner than my current phone with a 4.3″ screen is very tempting. DoubleTwist for a music player with Apple AirPlay comparability with my Apple TV.

    Galaxy S2 = 125.3 x 66.1 x 8.49mm
    iPhone 4 = 115.2 x 58.6 x 9.3mm
    Current Droid = 115.8 x 60.0 x 13.7mm

Too bad Verizon dropped the 1 year contract option, I would rather pay 70$ more for the phone and get a shorter contract.

I could have my ipod and my phone be all one thing. I had the original and I am now currently on the 3Gs. If it gets to be too late in the fall for a new phone to be released, I will have to wait until the spring to get a new phone. I do have to heat my home in the winter after all. It sucks, but there you have it. I will not go to Android, because as Darren stated, it is poop. One of my nieces has one and it freezes all of the time and there is a ton of malware out there that can ruin your phone. No thanks. I’ll stick with Apple.

IOS 5 is enough of an update to keep people strung along till next summer. Around the same time most
AT&T contracts will be up from the iPhone 4 and people looking to renew their current phone.

Everyone these days are locked into a 2 year contract, and just can’t drop and cancel it just because a

I am not sure that customers will remain satisfied with the iPhone 4 for too much longer. Especially if they think that something out there is better or newer. I, for one, will stick with Apple because they make such high quality products. I have never had a phone last as long as these ones do.

I’m bored! Lol (Kinda feels like i’m on facebook or twitter!) Anyway i really like my iPhone 4 and if a new iPhone doesn’t come out september, I will recommend you buy an iPhone 4. When I use an android device I just use it to mess around. Android works better on tablets, not phones! I really like the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, but I recommend it for leisure. If you want to use your tablet or phone for work and games, get an iPhone or iPad.

Actually, increasing the screen size keeping the same resolution lowers ppi. (FACT)

iPhone 5 will almost certainly be revolutionary new design and features and iPhone 6 will probably be minor upgrades of the 5
