iphone 5 screen

New purported photos of the iPhone 5's screen.

More purported evidence surfaced today that the iPhone 5 is looking more and more like a refresh of of the iPhone 4 — at least in terms of form factor and screen.

The latest news comes in the way of purported leaked photos of components, which shows a form factor and corresponding screen that looks remarkably similar in size and style to that of the iPhone. IBT had this to say about the photos in reference to screen size: “the N94 images showed a device similar to Apple’s current iPhone 4 handset. The only major difference noted by both sites was the camera module, which has a markedly different shape to the component currently used in the iPhone 4.”

Recent articles have concerned themselves with the size of the next iPhone’s screen, with top iPhone 5 competitors sporting screen that surpass the 4-inch mark. If Apple decides to hold true to the current specs of the iPhone on the next iPhone, the screen is likely to stay the same. Tech analysts have pointed out that the iPhone 4′s chassis offers only limited capabilities for expanding the screen, and that biggest it could be in order to retain proper screen resolution might be 3.7″ at most.

iphone 5 chassis?

This is a purported photo of the iPhone 5's chassis. Does it match up with the photo above?

This report comes on the heels of other component photos from last week, which show a new iPhone chassis that looks remarkably like the iPhone 4, and, while suggesting that it will have capabilities of functioning as both GSM and CDMA iPhones, does not suggest a radical, new for factor. You can check out those photos and article here.

In addition, new reports and sightings such as these further corroborate the intel that the iPhone 5 News Blog received from its own exclusive sources recently, which purport that the iPhone 5 will in fact utilize the same form factor and screen size as the iPhone 4. To be sure, it is entirely possible that everything we are seeing and hearing right now from the rumor mill is planted by Apple to lower expectations in a bid to blow users’ minds when the iPhone 5 is finally released — should Apple choose to actually call the next iPhone “iPhone 5.”

Let’s also not forget: even if Apple chooses to use the iPhone 4′s form factor and screen, groundbreaking features such as 4G LTE, NFC, an 8-megapixel camera, Nuance, and an advanced gesture home button could all still dramatically improve upon the current iPhone’s design — even if in the end the next iPhone is called “iPhone 4Gs” or “iPhone 4s.”

There is no way apple needed 14 freakin months just to give us the same thing for the 4th time (only this time with more power). Those pictures look exactly like an iPhone 4! What have they been doing?

I really hope those pics are from a new 8gb iPhone 4 or a brand new entry level iPhone. I saw a report yesterday from the people who manufacture the iPhone 5. The report stated that it would have a “simular” look to the iPhone 4 but it will have a metal back, slimmer case and a slightly bigger screen. I really hope that report is true and that we get to see the REAl iphone 5 soon.

I just do not see Apple being that out of touch with consumer demands as far as screen size goes. I know apple is all about keeping their designs minimalist and simple (among other things) but they could easily do that and make a 4″ screen. The increase in size of the phone would be minimal assuming a thin bezel. The 4.3″ phones such as the Thunderbolt, etc. are cool, but honestly just may be a bit too big. I think 4″ would be perfect, as do many consumers. Apple is smart enough to realize that the not only need to increase technical aspects of the phone, but they also need to have a simple thing that is easy to market, i.e. Larger Screen! that your average, not technical savvy consumer can bite into and understand very, very simply.
    …I really hope I’m right.

I log in to this site atlest 10 times a day hoping that some thing new would be in the news , but as things are going m sure ill go mad just by expecting some thing new and aways get disapointed . If applE gets their next I phone off the same scree size or any thing lesser than 4 inches then they not gonna get the expected sales what was predicted earlier off 25 million by the year end . Insted v may see these sales figures in for some amazing phones which are gonna come up like the nexus promen n from htc .

Also, that screen in the picture. It’s an iPhone 4. Someone please correct me if I am in fact wrong, but it looks COMPLETELY identical to an iPhone 4 screen when compared side by side.

I am unsure about the comment that if the screen gets no bigger the new iPhone will not meet projected sales targets. An awful lot of people buy an iPhone because it is an iPhone and it is slickly marketed. For instance face time, I have never used it,half the people that were impressed by it prob never even used skype before. We, who read this blog and others are more technically driven when we purchase a phone, but the majority want an iPhone thanks to it being in fashion, which is helped by apples slick advertising and hype… I know two friends who have an iPhone 4 and didn’t know how to use iTunes or that their laptop could connect wirelessly!!

Is it possible that Apple will not make their iPhone screen size too much bigger because it might negatively impact iPad sales?
Perhaps Apple is fine leaving their screen size as is…with the thought that if you want a bigger screen, then you just simply go purchase an iPad as well.
I personally agree with the people that don’t want a tablet as a phone. It’s a phone and it needs to remain small enough to carry in your pockets easily and still sit down without cracking the components.
I’m sure there’s a magic set of dimensions out there that Apple has researched with due diligence to meet the needs/wants/demands of “most” consumers regarding the best size of phone. Whatever size phone/hardware that is, also limits the screen size to a certain dimension of it’s own. And that is the screen size we will see.

    @ daniel cheader

not necessarily… i might be wrong, but if you look back to march, the iPad press release event invites went out just a week before the event. so i’m crossing my fingers for them to be sent out on the first. here’s hoping. it’s kinda pathetic, but i am genuinely getting mad at Apple at this point. i NEED a new phone badly.

  13. ShaneR926 Says:

Speculation has been that if the event will in fact be held on September 6th, invitations will go out tomorrow (the 31st.) So I’m keeping my fingers crossed, but if the talk of the early October release date is true, it seems like Apple would wait a little longer for the event just based on past trends. But, I am not at all associated with apple so anyone’s guess is as good as mine.

Jay, no, not really. The tablet market and smart phone market are different. Mainly due to size and the fact that a tablet cannot make phone calls, send text messages, etc. When comparisons are drawn between a tablet and a 4.3″ phone (or even the rumored 4.5″ HTC) it is not that they are literally turning into tablets. The average tablet is 9-11″ so although it may be a big screen size for a phone, it’s nowhere near a tablet.

  14. Eric Says:

Samsung just announced the GS2 today. Sprint model has a 4.517 inch screen. It’s a beast, and the smaller Europe version with 4.3 inch screen has been very well reviewed. It’s available for purchase in just over 2 weeks.

If Apple releases the Iphone 5 with less than a 4 inch screen, I think it is a huge opportunity for the Android marketing campaigns to compare and contrast apps with their larger vs Apple’s smaller screen. Apple fans will buy the Iphone no matter what, but the market is huge, and some sales will go to Android as a result. What percentage is the question? If Apple releases with the smaller screen, you have to assume that they’ve done their due dilligence and that the’ve determined it is the right size to maximize sales & profits.

Hope everything we are seeing lately turns out to be false. I’m certainly going to wait the extra couple of weeks to know for sure before deciding which to get.

i don’t care about the form factor i love the iphone 4′s shape. All I care about is speed and the screen. I want a 4 in or a 4.2in ( i can dream) and a processor that can hit at least 1.2 GHz and be dual-core. And i want a higher resolution, preferably 1280×720 at a high PPI maybe 326 or higher i mean why go backwards with the screen and have lower ppi then the old iphone 4. iOS 5 plus all those things I’m sold.

Doesn’t Apple make two different types of iPhone right now, one for AT&T and one for Verizon? Maybe this next “4S” is actually Apple simply making the universal iPhone 4 that works with both companies as well as Spring / T-Mobile.

But we still have not seen anything worth while that would really suggest an actual new iPhone 5.

  18. Eric Says:

The universal I phone4 is the Verizon version. It has the cdma/gsm baseband, only the gsm is software disabled & no sim card. Only hardware modification needed is to add the simcard for the Sprint Iphone 4 world phone.

  19. JustinQ Says:

Well I just saw the american version of the Galaxy S2 and I am tempted. Every article I’ve read about it has nothing but good things to say. It has a 4.3″ Super AMOLED screen (the sprint and t-mobile versions have a 4.5″ screen), a 1.2GHZ processor, 1gb of ram, an 8mp camera, a thinner profile and 4G. This is everything the iPhone 5 should be.

I really hope apple will give us something that will make this phone look like crap but so far the rumors look like:

    Galaxy S2: 4.3-4.5″ screen, 4G, new design, 1.2GHZ processor, 1gb ram, 8mp camera.

iPhone 5: 3.5-4″ screen, 3G, same design or simular, 1GHZ processor, 512mb ram, 8mp camera.

  20. Roflmao Says:

Now this is making more and more sense. Michael, your source (as I had suspected) saw this iPhone prototype, or heard about this iPhone. That’s why he’s been insisting that the next iPhone will be a simple refresh and have the same design as the iPhone 4. But that’s odd. This particular iPhone 4 like model (N94) has been floating around the world for months now. Specifically, BGR posted pictures of it showing that it was connected to T-Mobile’s 3G network quite a while back.

But it’s definitely seeming more and more like this being the iPhone 4S, or even just an iPhone 4 (that has a redesigned antenna to support CDMA and GSM at the same time). iPhone 5… when will you leak/come out?!

  21. Roflmao Says:

    JustinQ,

I’m not sure if you’ve read this article, but there was an article on Gizmodo that tested the iPad 2 against various tablets from different companies running different types of software. On all of the benchmark tests, the iPad 2 outperformed other tablets, despite the other tablets having better specs than the iPad. (One tablet had twice the amount of RAM the iPad 2 had). In fact, it is rumored that the iPad 2 can run HP’s WebOS better than the TouchPad can.

The reason? Apple. Apple has mastered what no other company has: the seamless perfection and unity of hardware and software. Because the iPad 2′s software was so efficient at using its available hardware, it was able to outperform the other tablets simply because it could allocate resources more efficiently. Other tablets had trouble because their hardware wasn’t designed to integrate well with the software (think Windows and PCs or Androids and smartphones/tablets)..

If in fact this is going to be a simple refresh where is the “magic” that Steve always likes to talk about? A new processor and camera ain’t gonna cut it. And I think the majority of bombshells regarding iOS 5 have been dropped. So what else are they going to talk about in their next event? Rehashing iOS, talking about a better camera and processor ain’t gonna make an amazing keynote.

I just don’t agree that a modestly upgraded (3.8″) screen would be suicidal. Apple makes phones for the masses. These people are going to surf the web (when they don’t have access to a laptop), watch video (when they aren’t near a TV), check email, and take some photos/video. I am one of those people and would be fine with a 3.8″ screen, and it’s already going to be be a quantum leap in speed from my 3g, no matter what comes inside. Tomorrow is a new month, meaning the feel is even closer to the anticipated release.

Logic says the next iPhone will be 5 as if it is called 4GS or similar there will be no 5 and it will be straight to 6.

I think Apple are yanking our chain and the case manufacturers have been told to gear for a 4 case when there will also be a rabbit out of the hat 5 as well to give us all 2 price options.

If any of you are waiting for the new release before you decide on which phone to buy, my contract ran out in April 11 (3G phone) and I renewed it but didn’t take a new phone so I have cash banked with my carrier for the big day.
