iPhone 5 Europe Release Oct. 15; Massive Pent-Up U.S. Demand
Posted by CharlesMoore on Thursday Sep 15, 2011 Under iPhone 5 News, iPhone 5 Predictions, iPhone 5 RumorFrench iPhone carrier service Orange’s CEO Stephane Richard let slip in a guest appearance on BFM Business that the iPhone 5 will be available in France on October 15. The Mac4Ever site’s arnaud quotes Richard saying: “If I believe what we were told, the iPhone 5 will be released Oct. 15.”
That squares with an iPhone 5 and iOS 5 launch timeline posted Tuesday by BusinessInsider’s Steve Kovach which also predicts that the iPhone 5 and iOS 5 will be ready for launch by mid-October. MacRumors’ Eric Slivka reports that In a new research note by analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reports that Apple expect to ship the golden master build of iOS 5 to its iPhone and iPod touch manufacturing subcontractors during the September 23rd through 30th interval, which would also point to a mid-October launch of the new iPhone once the operating system is on already-produced hardware and shipped to distribution channels.
However, Slivka also reports that Kuo is sticking to his story that he’s seen no evidence of a substantially redesigned iPhone 5 in the supply side pipeline, with his sources pointing to the “N94″ iPhone that has been provisionally dubbed “iPhone 4S” by rumoristas as the only new iPhone model set to ship, with Apple ramping up production of 30 million units by year-end, along with 5 million additional iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS units to tide over transition to the new model.
As for contentions that the N94 could be a decoy, while Apple keeps a redesigned iPhone 5 under tight wraps, Kuo is cited by Appleinsider’s Neil Hughes saying he’s seeing no signs of such a model anywhere in Apple’s supply chain, and reports that the N94 will ship with 512 MB of RAM and the same A5 chip as used in the iPad 2. He also reportedly notes that the handset’s case thickness limiting factor is the amera module’s height, with the camera modules for the new iPhone made by Sony and Omnivision expected to be almost the same height as the ones in the iPhone 4, so the next iPhone is not likely to be significantly thinner than the iPhone 4. The Retina display will also remain the same 3.5″ unit used in the iPhone 4, and that while Kuo isn’t 100 percent confident on the point, his sources are suggesting that Apple will use the same basic iPhone 4 form factor, with its glass back panel, and while it’s expected to have an improved antenna design, there will be little change to its shape, and users are not expected to see a discernable difference in the phone’s appearance.
Meanwhile, on the demand side, The Globe and Mail Report on Business’s Michael Babad reports that RBC Dominion Securities analysts are predicting “unprecedented” demand for the iPhone 5 and the domination of the iPad in the tablet market, citing a proprietary RBC survey by the firm’s Mike Abramsky, Mark Sue and Paul Treiberdata showing that 31 percent of respondents overall are very/somewhat likely to buy an iPhone 5, which handily exceeds pre-iPhone 4 launch buying intentions (25 percent) from a year and a half ago. Among current iPhone owners, buy iPhone 5 sentiment is more than twice as high, with, 66 percent of existing iPhone users affirming that they are very/somewhat likely to buy the iPhone 5.
Citing the same RBC note to investors as Babad, Fortune’s Philip Elmer-DeWitt reports that 54% of surveyed Sprint subscribers and 53% of surveyed T-Mobile subscribers also say they are significantly/somewhat more likely to buy the iPhone, if it becomes available with their respective carriers.

I hate Kuo for not predicting there will be a major redesign.

I have a friend who’s a game developer for iPhone. He told me that new iPhone’s specs will be those of iPad 2. He also said he knows nothing about a redesign and that there is NO WAY that it will come out before New Year.
So get a life and stop hating people for not telling the things you wanna hear. We can all survive a few extra months wait.

There is no way I am going to buy redesigned iPhone 4! If apple do this stunt, at least I save some money and buy a cheap android.

So presuning iPhone 4 can run iOS 5 and the screen quality, size will not change, what are the main draws ofthe net iPhone? I presume more processing power and better gfx on games etc? Better camera? But what are it’s usp’s going to be? Because for me, the iPhone 4 doesn’t appear to be that sluggish. I wonder what features will make me want to buy it?!

Ok, if its going to be just a refresh with new processor and stuff, i wont buy it. My ipod Touch 4thg is very nice, and almost the same as the iphone 4, so i see no reason to buy the new iphone.

Lets look at this without the Apple Fanboy blinkers on. Iphones have never been the best phones available from a technical standpoint. However the selling point is the OS. The 4 is not a quantum leap from the 1 so why are so many folks in here expecting a leap forward to the 5 (or whatever it is called)?

since my link is awaiting moderation…. macrumors has pix of alleged screen protectors for the hoped-for improved design now… same sources, so nothing really new other than that they have allegedly now made screen protectors in addition to the cases…

I dislike the form factor of the IP4 and have hung onto my 3G simply for this reason. It’s a personal thing why one person likes one design and not another. If the next release is the same shape as the IP4 then it’s simple, I just won’t get one again and I’ll wait patiently for the IP6 although my phone IS on its last legs now so I may have to get a cheapie to tide me over.
We will never all be in sync with our carrier contracts and our phones and there is no harm in not having the latest ‘coolest’ release if you don’t really like it for any reason.

Cap Kirk, you would be best served by picking up a cheap deal on the 4 since it will be iOS 5 that makes the phone do what you need/want.

I strongly belive that the N94 iPhone prototype is just a cheaper 8gb iPhone 4 that will launch on all networks. Even this kuo guy has said he is not 100% sure that the iPhone 5 is the N94. This is because no one has seen the iPhone 5 yet besides the higher ups at apple and the manufacturers. If the iPhone 5 was just going to look the same as the iPhone 4 then why would these companies be spending lots of money making casses and screen covers for an iPhone 5 that looks much different.
I think it is very possible that someone who works at Foxconn was able to measure the iPhone 5 and sell those specs to case manufacturers.
Also you have to remember that Apple did make an iPhone 4S that was only for app developers. The iPhone 4S was never meant for customers, it was just a way for app developers to get used to developing for the A5 on a smaller screen. The iPhone 4S was an iPhone 4 with an A5 chip. Therefore any leaks of an iPhone 4 with an A5 could just be one of the developer phones that had gotten out. Here is the article for anyone that is interested: http://www.macrumors.com/2011/04/21/apple-seeding-high-level-gaming-developers-with-a5-based-iphone-4s/

great comment and insight as usual, JustinQ. Your theory is plausible. If there’s only one iPhone coming out, then I’m convinced that it will take on the form factor of the iPhone 4. The only way I see there being a radical new iPhone form factor with a bigger screen is if two are in fact being offered. As far as I can tell, quite a few people have seen the new iPhone that looks like the iPhone 4, but the only “evidence” of an overhauled iPhone 5 are screen protectors and cases made by dollar store Chinese manufacturers. If they have the inside track on the next iPhone, and all of the more credible sources (which generally come from top case companies) are wrong, then I will be shocked. But I guess anything’s possible.

Until proven otherwise, I refuse to believe we get the same form factor. I mean it’s possible that Apple expects to sell boatloads of these things on the operating system and processing power, but I don’t think likely. I predict modest changes compared to iP4 (maybe a little more rounded), and 3.8″ screen. I am dumping my 3g ASAP either way, just hopeful to see my wishes granted.

My white 3GS is hammered – stress cracks and poc marks on the back, replaced glass, chip in camera lens, broken bits around the card slot and volume button. It will be replaced with whatever comes next. Since I’ve been patient, I’ve saved for the highest version available. One thing, tho – the performance of this little guy has never been in question. It has treated me much better than I have treated it.
