Case-Mate Now Says iPhone 5 And iPhone 4S Both Coming [Updated]
Posted by CharlesMoore on Friday Sep 16, 2011 Under iPhone 5 Predictions, iPhone 5 RumorAs reported by Michael on Thursday, electronic device case manufacturer Case-Mate first posted, then pulled what can probably be best-described as an Apple unauthorized preview of its iPhone 5 case line. Presumably, Apple was not amused.
To wit: Case-Mate has now replaced the preview with a page containing a nuanced discussion of Apple’s forthcoming handset hardware roadmap and only one cryptic image labeled “iPhone?”.
The note on the Case-Mate Website observes that the wait is almost over as the next generation iPhone 5 / iPhone 4S will be released in the coming weeks, noting that the guessing game continues as to whether Apple will unveil the iPhone 5 or the iPhone 4S. Case-Mate pledges to be ready in either instance with a collection of iPhone 5 cases / iPhone 4S cases to protect your new iPhone.
The case vendor says that now only days away from Macworld Asia 2011, incorporating a conference from September 22-23 and Expo from September 22-25 at the China National Convention Center in Beijing, the countdown to the iPhone 5 announcement and launch is officially on, with more and more reports saying that Apple is expected to time the long awaited iPhone 5 announcement to coincide with the conference in Beijing. As Apple fans around the globe patiently (?!) wait out the final days, Case-Mate says its insider sources have in hand the sought-after details on the iPhone 5 features, including the form factor and launch date, but coyly affirms that “rumors are” the new iPhone 5 will feature a completely different form factor than its predecessor, but gets more specific noting that the redesigned fifth-generation device will be wider and thinner, and feature an extended home button, teasing that the screen size could also see an increase to 4 inches.
They note that also included in the rumors is that the iPhone 5 will be powered by an A5 dual-core processor, similar to the one used in the iPad 2, equipped with an 8 megapixel camera, support wireless charging and have iOS 5, which features iCloud portable storage capabilities (essentially a given), launch worldwide simultaneously, and be available in black and white with 16GB and 32 GB options, with insiders expecting an early October launch.
Case-Mate says its collection of iPhone 5 cases will range from the slim Barely There to the protective Tough case.
Update: The French Apple news site HardMac today posted photographs of what the Chinese language Hong Kong based site unwire.hk suggests is a screen protector for the iPhone 5, along with mockup renderings of what the handset is guessed to look like.
HardMac’s Lionel notes that based on these pictures, it appears that the fifth-generation iPhone is a bit longer but quite a bit broader with a bigger Home button.

As for the debate over whether the new iPhone will be an iPhone 5 or iPhone 4S, Case-Mate allows that according to its inside resources, it appears that Apple will be indeed launching both an iPhone 5 and an iPhone 4S in early October, adding that speculation indicates that the iPhone 4S will feature the same form factor as the iPhone 4 but be internally upgraded with the latest technology, including the A5 dual-core processor and 8 megapixel camera.

I think with this new phone we are going to see a price increase which is the real reason for the 4s, which will probably stay 200 with a 2year upgrade. So they will have the new phone probably at 250-300, and iphone 4s at 200, and an iphone 4 at 100 and a refurbished iphone 4 at 50 and refurbished 5 and 4s at a between 50-300 price as well. That is my guess. Outside of that, looks like the new phone will be what we all hoped it would be.

So the conference from September 23-25 is when they will ANNOUNCE it or are they just discussing it there with no press? Confused.

An announcement of the new hardware in China makes a ton of sense if contract negotiations are complete to launch the iP5 in PROC. This is potentially exciting news. Carrier testing for iOS5 is expected to be complete by that time. One problem I see is timing. The announcement would likely come at best late evening or in the wee hours of the morning on the east coast, if not in the dead of night. Tough to manage, but not necessarily a deal breaker, because Apple knows that the US is going to eat up their phone, and China is a gargantuan market to tap into.
I would be willing to drop a couple sheckels on this being the announcement period.

I think it was a traffic building stunt for their page.

Although a brilliant one, I think it was a stunt, too. I’m betting there will be both phones…eventually…but not released at the same time…4S in October and iP5 in 2012.

I’m sure many know this already, but OtterBox also has a page for the next iPhone. It says:
“Of course we’re making a case for it! Like everyone else, we’re waiting to find out exactly what ‘it’ is. We’re eagerly anticipating the moment Tim Cook steps up to the podium to enlighten and delight us all. Whatever it turns out to be, we’ll have iPhone 4s cases or iPhone 5 cases for you!”

Hearing a lot of negative comments on the shape of the home button, maybe it is some kind of home button gesture requiring the user to swipe to the left and right? Possibly to switch between apps or web pages. It doesn’t sound like apple would change their own trademark.

” Case mate allows that according to inside sources, Apple will indeed be launching both an iPhone 5 and a 4S in early October ”
WHAT INSIDE SOURCES & HOW RELIABLE?
Is this just another story from somebody who works in a Chinese factory telling all without having any evidence to back it up.
I certainly don’t think anybody in Cupertino is going to be putting their job on the line to give an interview to Case Mate or anybody else.
Where is the historical precedent for Apple releasing either two new iphones one slightly better than the other or a new phone and upgrading the existing model?
Traditionally the situation has been just the opposite:
In the past we have had a new iPhone and then the previous model gets dumbed down ( not improved ) and sold for less.
When the 3GS came out the 3G had its memory reduced and the price lowered.
When the 4 came out the 3GS had its memory reduced and the price lowered.
So why should Apple suddenly decide to release the iPhone 5 and improve the iPhone 4 .. there is no precedent or economic logic to it because Apple don’t want to release two new phones designed to compete with each other.
Apple want people to buy their premium and more expensive phone and make the old model less desirable but still a nice enough product
We will probably have an 8GB black only iPhone 4 and a 16Gb & 32Gb black only iPhone 5 both looking very different physically.
There seems to be no hard evidence for any of this sounds entirely based in unsubstantiated rumors which have been floating around for a very long time like the fact it will have an A5 chip, improved camera and new button.
