The Big Day: Apple Unveils the iPhone 5
Posted by Michael Nace on Tuesday Oct 4, 2011 Under iPhone 5 News
Today, Apple will reveal the fifth generation iPhone 5, marking a 15-month wait for the elusive iPhone 5. Follow this article throughout the day for real-time updates on the Apple iPhone 5 media event.
October 4th may come to represent one of the most cathartic Apple product announcements ever — the launch of the fifth generation iPhone. Newly-appointed Apple CEO Tim Cook will make his first major on-stage PR performance today at 10:00 am PST on Apple’s own corporate campus in Cupertino, CA to a packed house of journalists in what promises to be a monumentous fifth chapter in the ever-escalating success story of the iPhone.
Dubbed the “iPhone 5″ by tech media and enthusiasts alike, this iPhone iteration brings with it a level of anticipation and mystery that no other iPhone model — or smartphone, for that matter — has enjoyed since the launch of the smartphone market segment in mobile computing and telephony. The landmark sales success of the iPhone 4 has launched the iPhone brand to a point where tech analysts believe that 41% of all mobile phone users — and 35% of the population overall — will eventually come to purchase an iPhone 5.
But while many people are certain that they’ll purchase an iPhone 5, little is confirmed about what to expect from its features, its official name, and even if there will be two new iPhones instead of one.
The Summer has been filled with a series of conflicting reports that claim the next iPhone will either sport a larger touch screen, new look and form factor, or keep the current screen size and chassis of the iPhone 4. Because of the inconclusiveness of the rumors, as well as Apple’s trademark silence about its new iPhone developments, no one in the media knows for sure what to expect from the iPhone 5. For this reason there is even speculation that the next iPhone could be called “iPhone 4S” if it turns out to be a refresh of the current iPhone 4, or even “iPhone 4G” if the next iPhone becomes the first to feature 4G LTE technology.
There are even rumors that Apple could reveal two new iPhones for the first time ever, boasting a totally redesigned, “pro” model iPhone 5, together with a lesser-equipped iPhone 4S.
What is certain about the next iPhone is that it will become Apple’s flagship mobile device for launching its audacious, new operating system, iOS 5, as well as iCloud — a cloud computing platform that will allow Apple users to easily share and access their data, photos, files, music, videos, and more on their iPhone, iPad, or Mac computer, thus creating an “Apple ecosystem” that could make owning a suite of Apple products irresistable for tech enthusiasts.
iOS 5 also proves to deliver a groundbreaking new user interface, with credible rumors that its new Assistant voice-activated technology will allow users to control virtually every facet of their iPhone with intuitive, user-friendly voice commands (that actually work, unlike much of the voice-activated technology on the market today).
While much is known about the iPhone 5′s expected software features — iOS 5′s beta version was launched at Apple’s Worldwide Developer’s Conference (WWDC) in June of this year — most of the biggest question marks remain about its hardware features. We know that Apple will equip the iPhone 5 with its new A5 chip — currently used in the iPad 2 — and very well may include an 8-megapixel camera; advanced, capacitive home button; and increased RAM and/or storage.
Regardless of what the next iPhone turns out to be — a refreshed iPhone 4 with advanced features or a revolutionary new iPhone design — the buzz surrounding Apple’s fifth generation iPhone promises to make it the most successful smartphone design ever.

I think I won’t be able to sleep, at this point I don’t care if we only get the 4s or just a speed bump I WANT IT NOW!

I have to wait until 6pm GMT, a whole day at work with no concentration.
IP5 = Shiny new, bright sunny with celebrations and champagne guzzling
IP4s = Monotonous boring same old same old and a large step towards the ‘Dark Side’. S stands for Slitherin
OOOh I think I need a break already!

Today is the day! Happy thoughts people! I too am in the UK (announcement is at 18:00 GMT), but I have footie training at…18:00!!! Argh…the dilemma!!!
I also understand there is not going to be any live streaming by Apple this year? So looks like it will be text based updates from a gadget site somewhere…anyone care to share how they will be following the announcement online?

At least you chaps in the UK only have to wait till 18:00, spare a thought for us Brits travelling (like me) and we are in a differnt timezone so need to add an extra 2 hours, so 20:00 for me!!
I think I just wet myself with excitement, whoops..!
Not sure what I’ll do at 20:00…anyone got a time machine handy that I can borrow??
Bring it on Mr Cook…we are all waiting…

Vernicularis & Blue2moro, I am also in the UK and it sucks to have to go through a full working day!!!
In my opinion I do not see Apple releasing an iPhone 4S when they have had enough time to blow us away with an iPhone 5. I think this is Apple just trying to through us off the scent. Also when Tim Cook intorduces the all new iPhone 4S with IOS5, that sounds rubbish and unprofessional. iPhone 5 and IOS5 sounds a whole lot better!

It does seem strange having iOS 5, iTunes 10.5 & the fact it’s the 5th Generation of iPhone to then find ourselves without an iPhone 5…Apple loves its simplicity.
However, the fact the announcement is being made on the 4th & there were 4 symbols in the announcement logo all point to it being an iPhone 4x (could be 4G if including LTE, or 4S if its upgraded internals in a similar casing).
Frankly, they could release an iPhone 4S in the exact iPhone 4 casing & screen size with the CPU, RAM & Camera upgrade & I’ll get it as my 3GS is just about ready for retirement (via eBay as it’s in such good nick of course). Anything will be an upgrade for me & there’s no way I’m going Droid!!
The only thing I do know is the missus is looking forward to me not spending every spare moment looking at iPhone 4x/5 rumours!! Little does she know those moments will soon be spent on new iPhone goodness…shhhh

I just don’t see there being a 4S. The competition are way ahead of the iPhone 4, all with 4G LTE, 8 meg cameras, super fast processors and amazing screens. A re-work of the 4 just won’t cut the mustard.
I will be ordering a new phone tonight. It will be an iPhone 5 or a Samsung Galaxy S II.

I really wanted a slightly larger screen. I have too many iPad apps that are both iPad/iPhone compatible.
It’s really the applications you use all the time that keep you tied to Apple or Android. People hate to have to repurchase the same app twice just for a new phone.
I have bought LogMeIn for both platforms. 30$ a pop.

Today is the day we find out what rumors are true. I really hope apple releases at least one phone that has a bigger screen, I don’t care if it’s a 4S or a 5. Apple needs to have at least one exterior upgrade to let everyone know that this is a new phone.
If apple only reveals a minor update to the iPhone 4, that phone will be crushed under its own weight from all the hype that it did not meet.
Like I said before, I will not lose hope for a real iPhone 5 until Tim Cook walks off stage and the event is over.

It’s bad that I’m skipping class today just to see this new fantastic apple product, whatever it may be. Hoping for a nice new iPhone 5 at 1 EST but I’ll settle for a 4s. It honestly just doesn’t make sense to me why apple wouldn’t make a brand new product; there’s no support for a refresh because apple just did things right this time. Well, we all shall meet back here at 10 PST, so see you all then!

I am however kind of looking at their icons on the banner. October 4th is the first icon, and the last is the Phone icon with the #1 on it….scared to say this but it could be only 1 iphone talk and it’s a 4s??

Ok, last hour prediction:
The 4 hype is misdirection, and Mr. Cook will get his “one more thing” moment.
Or..
It is just what it is, and I’ll hang on to the 3GS until the real iPhone 5 comes out.
Michael,
If it is a 4xx, will this blog still be the place for the next one, or will the iphone6newsblog.com be for the iPhone 5?

From the Telegraph liveblog, on Siri:
19.18 Users will summon Siri by holding down the home button. Showing the system off, Scot Forstall asks, “do I need a raincoat?” and it replies that “it sure looks like rain today”.

I’d just like to apologize to you all for the lack of play by play coverage of the media event. This morning, the Drudge Report carried my article, and the traffic has been so heavy that I could not even get into the blog back end to do anything. By noon, we had had 2.4 million hits – though most didn’t even get through to read anything. I’ve been back and forth with the server all day, and they tried to help, but they really let me down. I am sorry if I let you down as a result.
I know that there will be some disappointment with the iPhone 4s, but we’ll talk it out. In the end, I think we’ll all see this to be an amazing new iPhone.
I’d also like to say that we pretty much called this iPhone right. Our source was dead on.

Oct 4th, 2011 is the day Apple has stopped innovating and started playing catch up. I haven’t been waiting since April for this ugly piece of crap. The choice is now between a Galaxy S2 or waiting for the Nexus Prime.

I agree, Nik. I’ve been holding onto my sllloooowww 3G even though I’ve been eligable for a new phone since June. This 4S would certainly be an upgrade for me, but I don’t want to be locked into a contract if the 5 comes out early next year with the two feature that I really wanted, a 4″ screen and 4G. Maybe I’ll buy the 4S and try to sell it once the 5 comes out…

“Apple Unveils the iPhone 5″
Guess not. This blog will live on after all!
I can’t believe it’s a 4s, granted the camera sounds AWESOME….. but the screen is the same. I have a droid X now, going from a 4.3″ to a 3.5″….. Apple is letting themselves get passed up again! Feels like Windows vs OSX is happening to their phones. Android will continue to grow alarmingly fast.
I’m an Apple guy, but honestly, I’m pretty pissed.

I wrote a few weeks back that Apple may be conceding the smart-phone to focus on their “core” products, PC’s and it appears that’s the case.
Yeah, there’ll be buyers for this thing, brand loyalty or whatever the reason, but with competition taking marketshare away from the iPhone4 the past 18 months, why offer such a small step forward that doesn’t satisfy market demands as defined by the competition?
Android here I come; we were played.

Wow, what a disappointment. Love the Siri option, global cdma/gsm, but the screen size is a huge fail. Probably going to take a pass and go with the GS2.
how very sad.

To describe the event in one word: DISAPPOINTING
I am so disappointed, i can’t put it into words.
A freakin iPhone 4S, 4S, WTF were Apple thinking. Same form factor, 64GB(woo), 8MP(this is actually quite good), SIRI doesn’t even come on the iPhone 4S.
So disappointed.

Mike i haven’t written a post in a long time. But after hearing about the 4s, i thought i may comment on how this 4s release is really good for your website. You still have a iPhone 5 to talk about! And also everyone who is disappointed, you have really nothing to be disappointed in. Most of you i imagine are not computer science majors and know nothing about programming or hardware/software etc. It is considered one of the hardest jobs in the world. You need to be an absolute genius. Here are reasons why apple did not make a larger screen.
1) The screen would not be nearly as clear
2) to expensive
3) would change the position of everything inside
4) Apple will make more money in the long run by releasing the 4s now, and then the 5 in june. Think about it. More iPhones will be available. If they skipped this and went straight for the 5 today, imagine what we would expect for the next iPhone. They would of probably of just made a few updates.
It would of been cool for a redesign and larger screen. But look at these android phones with these large phones. You can actually see (with good eyesight) each individual pixel. If looking at a circle it won’t look like it is perfect like it does on the iPhone’s screen. No matter what, Apple will continue to be extremely successful.

I am so not surprised by this.
Apple stunned the world in 07 with the iPhone. After that the only thing significant they did was add a front facing camera.
I hope no one buys this 4S. I really have to reconsider which phone I am going to buy. I HATE the idea of buying the 4S and supporting Apple.
The staff during the presentation all looked like TOOLS to me. But I blame the lack of iP5.

Pass, as long as iOS 5 works on my 3GS, I’m good for another year (unless my phone dies first). “Let’s talk iPhone” we knew was advanced voice control, the “1″ way too obviously (in hindsight) meant one phone instead of GSM and CDMA. Oi.

@Brent: Before you all click the dislikes on this, Windows is a better O/S, if you’re a hardware maker. Windows runs reliably (subjective, I know) on a plethora of hardware, while the Mac O/S runs even better (and more reliably) on a very limited hardware platform.
Apple set the bar low, and underachieved. That’s quite a feat.
For all of the Apple fanbois out there, you have been used. With expectation comes disappointment, and here it is. I really do not think that they’ll get this kind of anticipation for a device, until… the next one. Apple fans are predictable to a fault. I know, I’m one (not a fanboi, but a fan.)
Oh, and one more thing on the iPhone 4S: FAIL.

I need time to think and digest this abomination.
On the bright side I currently have 17 iPhone 3G’s and 1 3Gs between myself and my colleagues so I guess I could upgrade them all to 3Gs for free and start the wait for the 5 again.
But on the other hand most of the stuff Apple showed us tonight is already available on Android and with at least another 8 months to go before the next WWDC I can’t help but feel that when the ‘real’ 5 (or 6 as it will actually be) is released it will be behind the game again.

in retrospect with the new features presented i should get the 4S, i have my macbook and ipad so having all 3 working together with the new ios5 features would simplify things a great deal.
@Ryan P, im an electrical engineering major myself and the things you listed are spot on. im still a little disappointed but only because i was hoping for a different form factor, screen size wasnt much of an issue for me since i dont want the phone to get too big. personally the top 3 improvements i wanted more processing power (got that with the A5), better camera (check), and more storage capacity (check). 4G would be a nice bonus but the processor makes up for a good portion of that besides no point to 4G for me since my area doesnt have it fully established

@ Jeff
To each there own right? Not a fanboy by any means, just a fan. I’ve had great luck with Apple computers, and bad luck with Windows. I’ve also had bad luck with Android phones. I use Windows at work along with OSX every day. The difference is night and day to me. I hardly feel that windows is the superior operating system, and frankly I don’t care if one is actually better than the other.
I am disappointed about this 4s though. I think Apple took to the sidelines.

First time posting but have been following since February, great blog. Now to the “new” phone….
What a joke. I have been due for an upgrade on my ultra-fast Edge Network BlackBerry since February 2nd and this is what they release? I honestly don’t know what I will do for a phone now, because I feel like the 4S is the epitome of Apple’s arrogance. They know they can release anything they want and people will buy it just because its the new Apple gadget, just like the white version of the iPhone 4, and this exact fact has been proved over and over again on this blog. I can’t even remember how many comments I’ve read over the past few months where people said they would be disappointed but buy it anyway.
This is exactly why I have never purchased an Apple product before, and probably never will. If I would have known back in February that they would release the same phone with a new processor and camera, I would have just gotten the 4. Now I am so irritated I may just get the Galaxy SII, because I do not want to continue to support Apple’s arrogance.
And for the record, I work at an engineering company where everyone has droid phones and not one of them has had their phone crash or be as “unusable” as people lead you to believe. They actually love every aspect of their device and find it funny how the selling point of the new phone is borrowed Android features.

I like the Siri and I’m not about to waste the money I’ve spent on Apps by going to Android. Cameron suggested that Core2 jailbreak his phone because he wanted a larger screen. How would that fix anything, unless his Apple Aps are going to work on an Android platform?
The only question is whether I wait for the iPhone 5 or snag this on and spend most of my time with the “old” phone. I guess I’ve gotten used to it having bought the 3G just before the 3GS came out. Now I’ll have the 4S and they’ll probably release the iPhone 5 just after Christmas. Sigh, I really wanted an iPhone 5, guess I’ll get this and wait for the 6. Probably end up with the 5S (sigh)

Michael….you nailed it…and I now also am 100% sure your “source” knows what he is talking about. The fake “Case-mate” photos (now I see as very shady) just made the same design harder to swallow…but I stick with my original statement…”Apple NEVER said there was going to be an iPhone 5.” I’m now CERTAIN that the next one won’t be called a 5. The internal specs of the phone sound great though. I went ahead and got a bid from an iphone 4 buyer website and it was $265….I have 30 days to sell it for that price… Who knows… I may break my iPhone between now and then and NEED to buy a new phone…but thank you for my favorite “Real” site to discuss these things….can’t wait to get iOS 5…I’m synced, updated and made space for it next week.

Even if the screen size was the same, they still didn’t move to make it better. No AMOLED??
Siri seems cool, but hasn’t Google been doing that for a while? I feel the only reason they are offering that feature is because so many people use the Google app on their iPhones.
We had to wait forever for this phone, and it’s late. To add insult to injury, they want to charge a FORTUNE for the damn thing. $300 and $400 for the damn things?

OMG
Smaller or Bigger =/= (not equal) to better
It’s just individual preference!!!! That’s why there are 25″ TVs and 1 bajillion” Screen TVs…… Options guys, options!
Will making the screen bigger reduce clarity? NO!!!! OMG NO!!!!
if Pix per cm stays the same it doesn’t matter how big the screen is – in fact if pix per cm stays the same, the larger the screen, the higher the clarity!!!! Generally with larger screens you reduce the amount of pix per cm (or inch) because the viewing distance increases.
If Apple really wanted too, they could increase the screen size and keep the same pix per cm = better quality not worse quality….

Disappointing…… Definitely am looking forward to next Tuesday now!
“Samsung Mobile Unpacked 2011 – Google Episode” is on the October 11th.
http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_nexus_prime_coming_october_11th_with_ice_cream_sandwich-news-3202.php
I was planning on buying the iPhone 5, but I’m almost sure that the new flagship Android phone, the Nexus Prime, is going to completely outdo the iPhone 4S. This happened just as my perception of Apple was changing for the better too.. Like others have already said, the iPhone 4S just goes to show how arrogant Apple is (it’s predicting 26 million units of the 4S to be sold in 2011 Q4?!?!?!!?!?!?!?! WHAT??). Consumer exploitation.
Here’s to hoping that Samsung’s Nexus Prime is going to blow the iPhone 4S to bits!

Quite frankly, Michael, even though this whole thing resulted in utter defeat for me and my “4S is the stupidest name possible and Apple will not use it” campaign, I’m not all that disappointed at the phone itself. There was no redesign and that’s a letdown, granted, but everything we needed to call this iPhone an “iPhone 5″ is there: blazing fast processor, top-notch camera, revolutionary technology, and effectively 4G network speeds.
What I’m disappointed at (if my point wasn’t clear already) is that Apple opted to call this phone “4S” and not 5. They may have well called it 5 and it would have been pretty justifiable for them to do so. Besides putting a 5 on its name, they could’ve also trimmed some fat off the form factor, and THEN nearly everybody would have been happy with what’s already there.
I never expected to say this, but with the “iPhone 4S” Apple has shown to have a less than competitive marketing department. Odd to make that assessment of the company whose marketing prowess revived it from the ashes and took it to the very top of the business world, but that’s my strong opinion right now.

I think we had clues that Apple knew this would be a disappointment:
1. Having it at a smaller venue on campus rather than a larger one.
2. No live coverage of the event. CNN was allowed to show a tape delayed about 20 min.
3. Press was not allowed to look at or demo the phone. Wow… that should say something.
I really think Apple is just banking on the pre-orders and initial sales. I would not be surprised if a true “iPhone 5″ were released in less than a year, especially with the way the Android phones are advancing.

We wanted an iPhone 5, we gave them 16 months and in return they gave us the same thing we got last year. I hate Android, but the Galaxy S2 and the new Nexus are starting to look really good.

Looking back, it does seem that we were a product of our own house of cards. As an engineer, I always look for the following trend:
Rumor: Someone said something about something.
Rumor Confirmation: Management says that we need to look into this issue
Rumor Affirmation: The issue is causing |insert world ending calamity here|
This is how rumors become facts. I think that, when Apple has another announcement, before commenting, we should be required to read the comments on this page. And they should read the comments before making an announcement.

41% would move to 5 but less that 15% will move for a 4S!
If we look at where the Droid phones have come from in the life of the 4 where do you think they will be by the time Apple update again?
Apple lost the desktop battle and it looks like they want to lose the smartphone one too.

I guess the only thing we can hope for is for apple to release the iPhone 5 this June. I really don’t think I can wait until next October to get the phone we should have got.
Michael, are you going to keep the iPhone 6 news blog or are you going to take it down until 2013?
I’ve been going to some of the other apple fan sites and the reader comments for the 4S are very funny. It seems like almost every apple fan is pissed off. I really wish we got a new design and a Bigger screen, but I guess the new Suri feature is kinda cool. Hopefully the assistant feature doesn’t turn into something like Terminator. I can see it now, all over the world peoples iPhone 4S’s are trying to kill them. One more reason why apple should have made the iPhone 5.
I can’t help but feel sorry for Tim Cook. His first product launch made apple fans all over the world mad, and apple’s stock drop.

I hate that I’m going to be buying this phone. Absolutely hate it. I have to though. I can’t go android, if for no other reason because I want my iPhone to also be my iPod. I’m a college guy and don’t carry around a purse, so I can’t really be walking around with an iPod and iPhone, on top of a wallet, keys, etc. The Android system just, well it just doesn’t cut it I guess. And all the phones are really ugly compared to the iPhone 4.
Ugh. And I have a bad feeling Apple will be releasing the iPhone 6 at the WWDC. And there’s no way in hell I’ll be able to pay for it unlocked after I buy my iPhone 4S. Figures, for once I try to wait so I can have the cool technology thing right when it comes out, and be on the 2 year cycle for a new iPhone every 2 years when it comes out, but nope. I’m stuck with this.
And yes, Apple’s stock did fall around 5% after the announcement, until the last few minutes when the whole market shot up somewhere around 300 points, and apple rode that up.
On Verizon, will this phone be faster than the iPhone 4 as far as data speeds?

Apple continues to give the shaft to the most loyal of iPhone customers.
Two year contracts cause original iPhone users to have to settle with an old design refresh (3GS), and also again for this 4S.
Apple knows that between fanboys and the AppStore, they have their customers by the balls.

The specs are cool and the phone is nice. But I was really hoping for a redesign. I was eligible for an upgrade back in january and the fact that apple made me wait this long and then to reveal this is disappointing. But I won’t go android either because I’ve seen so many have problems a few months down the road. Apple does make a quality product. The comments on here are quite funny. The 4S is a HUGE improvement over the 4. Processor speed, memory, Siri, camera, etc, etc. The only thing that wasn’t changed was the screen size and the number 4. For those complaining because it’s still a 4, who cares what they call it? Would it operate better if you called it a 5 or if they changed the case? No, but if they called it a 5 and changed the back of the phone then everyone would be jumping for joy. Doesn’t really make any sense to me. The guts of this thing are all improved but the look isn’t. I guess I’m just a function over form type of a guy and am very happy with the update.

I agree with Tyrius, the specs are better than the Iphone 4 so I guess it depends on your own “perception” if this is a refresh or a brand new phone. Even though I was hoping for a larger screen and at first felt a little disappointed.. I’m still getting this phone, it’ll be infinitely better than my Nokia 5300, LOL!

@Tyrius – Most people, like myself, see this as a marginal improvement, and yet it is a late one. If it was a “5″, people would probably be more pissed off.
The camera is better. So what? It is now on par with what android has been offering for months.
The processor is now 1Ghz dual core. Again, Android has been offering this (and better) for months.
They offer 64Gb of memory. This is a good thing, and it’s about time. Again, Android has been offering this… and swappable.
The screen is the biggest disappointment. Not only are they not fully utilizing the real estate of the 4 form factor, but there is no new technology to improve the image quality. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, pick up a Galaxy S2 and look at the same picture as you would on an iPhone 4. Unless you’re colorblind, the choice is obvious.
BTW, I think Siri is a really cool feature. But you don’t need the 4S for it (it’s an iOS5 feature). You can also download it free from the app store.

First of all, great blog. I’ve been reading it since May.
Second of all, that’s it?
I will probably check it out once it come out in store, but for now I am leaning towards Android, especially Nexus Prime.

Timmaigh, yeah they do, but they lack iTunes and in all honest the Android interface or whatever you want to call it, just plain sucks.

Siri is only on the 4S.
From Apple’s own site. “Siri on iPhone 4S lets you use your voice to send messages, schedule meetings, place phone calls, and more.”
Gizmodo has an article stating that Siri only works on the 4S.
http://gizmodo.com/5846550/siri-personal-assistant-only-works-on-the-iphone-4s
It’s not going to be a simple upgrade to IOS5 and you have Siri, it’s limited to just the 4S. It’s also NOT on the app store. I just searched the store for “Siri” and the only thing that comes up is SiriusXM Internet radio.
And I already gave you the screen complaint (I’m perfectly happy with my 3GS screen so the one on the 4S will be improvement for me). I also don’t want a huge screen because then your phone is huge and clunky.

Im can’t believe this. I think I will use my mothers upgrade for the 4s (considering I have no choice since my current phone is broken) then when the iPhone 5 comes out ill use my upgrade and give my 4s to my mother. I love my mom for letting me do this lol.

Tyrius,
Apple serves up a phone that in every tech spec is worse than the current (and many previous) droid phones and you say we should be happy because it is better than the last iPhone?
Do you realise that the competitor for the 4S is not the 4? Or are you just such a fanboy that it is Apple or Apple or Apple or Apple?

Mark H,
Nope, I’m saying that I don’t understand the crying over not getting a “5″ name. A ton of comments are people complaining that they didn’t get a 5 when everything in the phone was upgraded, except for the screen. This phone is a significant improvement over the last phone. Who cares what the name is? The case I can see some complaints about as the glass back just adds fragility, but overall it’s typically covered with a case anyways so shouldn’t be that big of a deal.
I’d also dispute your claim that the 4s is worse than “the current (and many previous)droid phones”.

One other thing to consider is the history of the iPhones. They are never really bleeding edge technology. Apple would rather be the tech laggard than the bleeding edge. They’re more concerned with everything working seemlessly than they are with having the most cutting edge device. If you want to be on the bleeding/cutting edge then buy a droid phone, don’t expect Apple to give you something that they’ve never done before. They were slow on 3G, they’ll be (and already are) slow on 4G.
Just another thing that I don’t understand about those complaining about this release.

@Shane> well, the interface, thats matter of opinion, i can understand if you dont like it for some reason. But lack of iTunes is a bad thing since when? You can just drag and drop MP3s from your computer to the phone and do not have to deal with any annoying application on Droid, that is a good thing in my book.
I agree with you about iPhone still looking better than any Droid, although Galaxy 2 or Ericsson Arc do look good, its still not as good as Apple stuff.

There is more to a camera than megapixels. Even the iPhone 4 probably shoots better pictures than any of the current android phones. My Droid X has an 8 mega pixel camera but it is junk! And forget about low light.
Low light photography is probably the coolest upgrade to the 4s. F/2.4! that’s great!
Still think it should have had a bigger screen. I’m still pissed

@Brent
I agree. Just stating that it was an expected upgrade. I do, however, expect the Apple camera/software to perform better. That said, I do not see it as a big enough upgrade to pay as much as Apple wants without all the other features we wanted.

Tyrius,
I am not sure whose posts you are referencing but I think (from the plethora of times people have posted it) by disappointed they didn’t get the five.. They mean a larger screen and most likely the necessary form factor that goes with it. Though there are some people that care about phones looking pretty here and there most I know get down to how well it works at some point and the build quality.
I never saw the 4′s glass back as a smart move and moving away from a form linked with antennaegate is just good practice. All that is to say no, I believe you are incorrect, people are not complaining about the name but about the lack of what an iPhone 5 represented feature wise to them. Hope that clarifies.
I have to say the fact that the phone had no wow features was disappointing to me, and most of the features simply caught it up or still put it behind droids spec wise. Though I guess we still don’t even really know hardware wide what is going on. Will the A5 be clocked the same as in the ipad2 or underclocked? Is it 1gb or ddr3 ddr2… Is it 1gb heh. Did they use the same graphics chip as the iPad 2? While I will skip this phone, where it actually ended up hardware wise is not completely known yet. Guess we will know when anandtech or someone rips it apart.

Tyrius,
I think people are disappointed because the phone looks identical to those that have been out for a year and a half.
If I shell out 200 bucks, or more importantly, contracted for two years, I want my iPhone to AT LEAST look different than those whose contracts are going to be ending this year.
Assistant? Siri? Cool, but I have both hands and arms. Do I need an umbrella today? Click the stupid weather app.
I should have bought a 4 when it came out, at least I would have been able to jump on the wagon of customers that Apple truly loves (3G, 4, the real 5).

Timmaigh, very true. It’s just something about plastic (Samsung GSII, and really every other android) that makes it so much less cool. If android figures that out, then they will be truly dangerous.

I’ve just had a thought. Some of us have been wondering why it took Apple so long to release what looks like a minor upgrade. Someone even posted that they could have just called this one the “5″ and at least we could have felt better about owning it. This led me to think why didn’t Apple just call it “iPhone 5″ – it’s easy enough to change the product name late in development, but they chose not to.
The reason could be that the iPhone 5 is good to go, or nearly good to go, and the blocking reasoning was the legal dispute with Samsung. What if the iPhone 5 exists, but the lawyers warned it is not a good idea to release it now (even months ago). Remember Samsung have threatened to block the iPhone 5, but never said anything about the 4S. Maybe the 5 has technology on board that is in dispute with Samsung, and could cause major embarrassment if they announced it, then nobody could buy one. The 4S may well be cobbled together technology, but it could well be technology that is safe from lawyers.
