My iOS 5 Upgrade Experience

Posted by CharlesMoore on Thursday Oct 20, 2011 Under iOS 5 News

If you were here last week, you may recall that I was congratulating myself for delaying an upgrade to iOS 5 with regard to issues early adopters were reporting, much of that presumably due to server congestion in the initial demand spike.

I also don’t have OS X 10.7 Lion installed on my production Mac, and don’t intend to make that jump anytime soon, so the data synchronization aspect of iCloud would be unavailable to me, and DropBox and Box.net (50 MB free storage offer for iOS users!) are doing a good job in that department.

However, curiosity got the better of me, and with the dust having settled a bit, I decided to take the plunge. First up was to download and install iTunes 10.5 on the Mac. I discovered that there were quite a few other upgrades I hadn’t gotten around to installing, and I ended up checking off nine to run concurrently, which ate up over an hour for the download, installation, and a couple of reboots.

With that taken care of, I plugged in, opened iTunes 10.5., and was duly informed that a software update was available and some synchronization issues needed to be attended to.

The progress bar initially estimated about 50 minutes for the upgrade, but 50 minutes passed, then quite a few more minutes, and finally the download entirely terminated with the helpful message appearing that the server had timed out. At least I didn’t get the dreaded Error 3200. Back to square one. I initiated a second attempt to download the IOS 5 install. This time it actually did take about an hour and fortunately seemed to have completed successfully, but some warning dialogs then appeared, with the ultimate upshot being that I would have to do a Restore run.

I complied, but not without consequences; either the iOS 5 upgrade or the Restore process, or a synergy of both, nuked my entire collection of third-party apps. Just gone. I was not enchanted.

On the upside, iOS 5 seems to work just fine, although I haven’t noticed any dramatic increase in speed At least there doesn’t seem to be any serious problems other than the necessity of downloading, and in some instances reconfiguring settings, all those applications –– the basics of which kept me up until after 3 AM before I finally decided to pack it in. At least I have fresh installs of my apps.

iOS 5 certainly isn’t revolutionary, at least if one doesn’t have an iPhone 4S for access to Siri and is not running OS X Lion (on a Mac) for iCloud synchronization. I’ve kept iCloud turned off for now. However, it seems like a solid OS once you manage to get it downloaded, installed, and things reconfigured.

I jumped ship back to an Android phone (Bionic) a day before iOS 5 release, due to ICS and Verizon LTE coming soon in my area. My friends and coworkers were cursing the next day due to similar issues you described above. I’ve played around with iOS 5 on my friends’ phones and wasn’t too terribly impressed as jailbreakers have had similar functionality for a long time now. Your last paragraph sums it up nicely – Siri is neat for 4S, but beyond that, nothing earth shattering. Props to a stable OS though.

I’m just going to write down what Apple has done wrong and what they should of done (sorry if it’s a bit lengthy). First off, Apple should of never said that siri needs the A5 chip to run because hackers have successfully gotten siri to function on the iPhone 4 (A4 chip). Only problem is apples servers are not recognizing siri on the iPhone 4, thus, hackers need to get this done in order for siri to work. I think the smartest decision apple could of made was making a new iPhone 5, and keeping the iPhone 4 as the cheaper model. They should of released siri as part of iOS 5, to make iOS even cooler then is already is. The new iPhone 5 could of had features like 8mp camera, bigger screen, curved glass design (or any new design), 1 gb ram, better front camera, increased battery life, A5 chip etc. Maybe apple could of included siri on the iPhone 5 but if you had the iPhone 4 you could buy it for lets say 10/20 bucks. Apple releasing the iPhone 4S might have been the best for apple business wise, but most definitely not best for reaching expectations of many Apple fans. No matter how advanced other phones get i will always stick with the iPhone because for me it is the simplest and most fun to use out of all the smart phones. But apple set the bar so high when they released the first iPhone in 07, and shortly after that companies started making phones that were/are tough competitors. I feel that if apple released a iPhone 5 with the features i mentioned above, people would be wow’d a whole lot more. Siri is really cool and is only in a beta (expect it to be for a long time!). Siri is responsible for a ton of iPhone 4S sales because it seems as if siri can think. Well for those who don’t know much about computers, in todays society there is no such thing as a computer that can think. It can seem like a computer can think because there are thousands if not hundreds of thousands of lines of code that tell siri what to do in a certain situations. Apple may have people thinking that siri is artificial intelligence when it is NOT and hence, people being fooled into buying the 4s for the wrong reason. This is obviously only my opinion. I think if apple came out with a new iPhone 5 then even more people who have the iPhone 4 would of switched over. Many jail breakers are not switching over because besides the camera, mostly everything you can do on the 4s can be or will be able to be done on the 4.

I upgraded my 3GS 3 days ago to ios5…the first attempt crashed with a different error code, but the restore and upgrade went well with only 1 app being lost (out of many!). I did lose my synced movies and photos but they are on my pc so no big deal. The process took about 3 hours, not horrible considering the crash which really freaked me out. It is now slower is some ways, but I think that s because I am syncing to iCloud for several things. I love that taking a photo now iCloud streams to my iPad and music purchases push to my 3 idevices, and my contacts! I am in backorder hell for my 4s and can’t wait for the speed and camera (I love taking pics) and the silliness of Siri (maybe ill take it seriously when I try it, but it seems silly now). Although ios5 is really tweaks to the os, I really like it and am glad I upgraded my 3GS. The notifications on the lock screen and (of course) access to the camera from lock screen are excellent. While not relevant to this article, ios5 on my iPad is cool and some of the tweaks are very useful, especially iCloud.

The first couple of times that I updated (3GS and iPad 1), I lost some apps and one event on my calendar. Not a big deal. I had no trouble downloading the updates at all. They took about 2 hours each, but I think that my poor decrepit computer is what slowed that down. My iPad is much faster. We then had an “update party” for my sister and niece’s iPhone 4′s and my mother’s 3GS. My niece and my mother had no problems at all. My sister had tripled contacts and added apps. Not bad over all considering! LOL! At least they didn’t lose anything. The stuff that I lost? My son Matthew (he’s 6) remembered almost all of what I had lost and I remembered the rest. I am now just waiting to see when my 4s will come. I ordered the white 16 gb one like I had wanted! It is scheduled to arrive between the first of the month and the eighth. I am dying right now! LOL!

There is a problem with the camera app. It takes photos inverted. Yes, they look
Fine on the phone of course. The screen auto rotates on how you hold the phone.
If you hold the phone volume buttons up (as illustrated) the photos are inverted.

Hook your phone up to your computer and pull some photos or video off the phone. It’s
    Upside down.

Want more proof? Go to Apples iPhone 4s page that shows off the camera photos. Download
The high res photo of the squirl. It’s upside down as well.

I haven’t yet taken the plunge on my White MacBook. I’m really nervous about doing any kind of updates that might not go smoothly leaving me frustrated and wishing I hadn’t done it. I’m planning on getting a new laptop probably next year, so I might just wait and not deal with it unless I absolutely have to. But I must admit, the syncing to the cloud would be kinda cool.

I just received my 4s today and am loving it! I tried SIri once or twice, but my fear of the battery consumption is prompting me to leave it turned off. But heck, I didn’t buy the phone for Siri. This is my first iPhone and I love the fact that I now have the holy trinity…..mac, iPad and iPhone. LOL!

Got my 4s today and also love it. Siri (which is classed as beta) seems to work fine. iCloud (which is not listed as beta) is a disaster – doubled all my appointments as soon as I activated it on the phone. I don’t mind being a beta tester when they warn me about it, but I hate being a beta tester on an ap that is not listed as such.

I’ve turned calendar off in iCloud, may turn the other things off too if they start to bite me. I’m yet to be impressed by iCloud.

I doubled my contacts by mistake checking the ‘sync with Google contacts’ box under Info in iTunes initially. Deleted them all and left it set to iCloud, and it’s fine now.

Makes me a bit nervous all my contacts are in the cloud, and not on the phone, but no issues yet.

Updating my 3GS was painful. Lost all apps. All books/pdf’s. Got it straight finally though. Seemed to slow down my 3GS a bit. Love the new features!!

    Off topic:
How is everyone’s batteries doing now a week into the 4S? I had 12 hrs on my yesterday and was still at 50%. I’m getting happier by the day! Also, how about signal strength? Coming from my 3GS, this 4S has a noticeably longer range for wifi signals. Also, on cell coverage, I live and travel during the day through VERY rural areas in southern Illinois, this phone has carried calls through areas that haven’t been able to carry through since the days of the little hole in the back of the phones for an antenna on my car. I didn’t expect any improvement, and I’ve been VERY impressed.

Just wondering what everyone else is getting? Maybe an idea for an article Charles or Michael.

I don’t see what the big battery complaint is. How long are you really away from a USB port all day?

I used it sporadically throughout the work day, did some web surfing and gaming in the evening, and tried to run out the battery before I went to bed, but I got tired first. So I have no battery complaints based on my usage.

Upgrading from a 3G I just found out about apps running in the background and how to close them which will help.

Core2, I am with you. How long are you really away from a charging source if you even need it which I don’t? If I travelled a lot I would take a car or USB charger.

I don’t watch video much on here, because I don’t see the point I watching movies or TV on my phone. I have devices for that. I just love the web speed for quick reference on things, maps for when I get lost, always with me calendar, and general utilitarianism you get from a smartphone.

Followed all the directions to download and update IOS 5 with my (work) iPad. The result: disaster. The ‘wipe and restore’ process corrupted my backup (and iTunes was somehow set, despite my efforts, to keep overwriting the previous backup), so I lost everything and have to start from scratch. Apple should be ashamed.

The iPad got some type of “tabbed” browsing upgrade with iOS 5 I think. Don’t have an iPad but I read something about it. Seems like there is some new gesture to change tabs. I’m sure someone else on here is more familiar with it.

On a more serious note that the videos. What is everyone’s experiences with the whole “yellowgate” issue? I still have family waiting to buy.
A few people had suggested glue (seems to be shot down as the reason) or LCD burn in period other people are saying it is based on who was the display manufacturer used in the batch.

    http://9to5mac.com/2011/10/18/iphone-4s-teething-problems-yellowgate-poor-battery-performance-silly-siri-stuff-and-lots-more/#more-100377

From the various forums the yellow tint problem seems a pretty widespread issue including Apple’s official forum.(Linkin the 9to5 article) I am hoping the others like camera rattle and the vibration mentioned in ilounges review is just random issues is specific phones.

    http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/reviews/entry/apple-iphone-4s-16gb-32gb-64gb/

    Quotes from it:
    Screen vibration:
“though the new model oddly feels a little more hollow when you tap on its 3.5” screen and feel vibration rather than rather than the prior model’s utter stiffness.”

    Yellow screen:
“Our test iPhone 4S units’ screens had an ever-so-slight yellower tint than our iPhone 4 units, but Apple now sources screens from multiple companies for its devices, and this will likely vary between production runs.”

    Yellow pics:
Zoomed out, the iPhone 4S images often look as if they have a yellow tint outdoors or indoors, making pictures look just a little unnaturally warm versus the iPhone 4’s bluer tint; we tested multiple iPhone 4S units, white and black, and the results were the same.

Yeah, you do lose screen space with the tabs. I’ve noticed that. It didn’t brick my iPad 1, John, but the iOS is pretty buggy. It is getting better, but a lot of things crash right now. I am hoping that they will release an update soon. And yes, I have rebooted my iPad, cleared out the very bottom strip when you hit the home button twice, deleted and reinstalled my apps, reset it to factory specs and restored it, etc etc etc. It didn’t brick it, though. The thing is, even with all of the bugs, my iPad is still faster than my computer! LOL! I should not laugh, because that is really sad…

Hi guys, I’m happy to report that after using the phone for a week I’m really impressed and happy with my purchase. The battery life is great and I use it a lot (also I agree with the others that say it’s not that bad, there’s always a place to charge it…) and reception has been wonderful! My house is a bit of a black hole lol haha but I have great signal in here and also really good WI-FI signal. Hadn’t had a problem and I’m really happy :) been using Siri to set timers, alarms, send emails and whatnot haha it’s fun although I only use it when I’m at home. Also, on another note.. my husband and I were comparing Siri vs Vlingo (a similar app for Android), I don’t mean to start another Apple vs Android war because I actually like Android too (my husband has a Galaxy SII) but Siri won hands down, even with a beta version it was more reliable and useful than Vlingo. So my verdict is: so far, so good! I’m happy with my phone and my experience has been a good one :)

Apple wasn’t expecting too many people to upgrade all at once … but with iOS 5 betas all over YouTube I guess the word got out quickly. I know I was showing off my iPhone with iOS 5 back in June/July/August and everyone kept asking me when to upgrade. I think as Apple becomes more prominent, they should invest in better servers and just higher quality networking data centers. It’ll be worth it in the long run and practically pay for itself in no time the way they’re selling iPhones, iPods, and iPads as well as iBooks, Apps, Music, Videos, and what not. Great software, bad upgrade process, Apple will learn their lesson.

I’m not having any battery issues. In wondering if it was a bad batch? Seems odd that the experiences are so completely different. I got a cool otterbox defender case for it brcause I’m so fearful of dropping it. I’m not exactly the most graceful person on the planet. Anyway, I’m going to wait till iCloud settles down before I do anything it’s it. For now, dropbox works fine for me and I don’t continually buy music that I would need to care that much about iTunes syncing in the cloud. It would be nice though if my calendar would sync without me having to plug it in, but hey, life could be worse right???

Was on vacation till Wednesday, so the 4s was waiting for me when I got back. I’ve been using it for two days now, and it is very fast, works well. I’m on Sprint, so my smartphone experience is all with android. A couple of questions for you IOS users:

Does Swype not exist for IOS? Is it called something else, or how do I get it on my keyboard? Typing is very slow otherwise.

I’m already getting spam telemarketer calls. Android had a zillion free apps to block them. What are they called in the apps market? I only find one, which has a fee of $4.95 per month, and lots of complaints about the app not working well in the reviews. How do you guys resolve this issue?

Those are really my only complaints about the phone, and seems like they should be simple to fix. Siri works better than I expected, and does a decent job of doing voice to text messages, but the editing afterwards is still a slow process. There are not any arrows to move the cursor where you want it in the middle of a sentence to fix whatever siri didn’t do correctly, and the small screen makes it difficult to get the cursor to the exact spot you need.

I went to the Sprint store yesterday to get my contacts migrated, and played with the GS2 a bit. 4.5 inch screen is too big for my hand, and it was ackward to hold. Guess I have to agree that around 4 inch screen size is about ideal, so that is what i’m hoping for in the next Iphone 5 or whatever it ends up being called next year.

Thanks in advance for any advice on my issues, following this blog the last few months has been entertaining.
    regards,Eric

I do like the phone, and am pretty sure I will keep it, but I need to resolve these issues.

  32. Bowtie Bob Says:

@Eric, unless you jailbreak your phone, there is no swype. To stop the telemarketers, put your number on the Do Not Call list (www.donotcall.gov). When trying to place the cursor, hold down your finger and a magnified section will appear. Just slide your finger until the cursor is is the right spot.

  33. Eric Says:

    Bowtie,
thanks for the tip about the magnified section – that helps. I’m on the do not call list, so i’m not sure why i’m getting these calls. I’m getting calls that show the phone number and show them as blocked. Found last night that I can just save them as a contact, and change the ring tone to silent, so now i’ve got half a dozen “spam” contacts in my contact list.

Jailbreaking is a software hack? Is it easy and is there a risk of bricking the phone? Also how often does Apple release updates? Is the jailbreak gone whenever they push out an update? What happens to those apps at that time? Are they gone from your phone, or just inactive until the next time until you jailbreak again?

    Thanks,Eric

I’m running iOS 5 on my iPhone 4 and I gotta say that it’s as smooth as butter! People are complaining that apps are crashing and stuff but that’s because you gotta wait until they optimize them for iOS 5. I updated my friend’s ipad 1 and it also ran very smoothly. My mom’s iPhone 4 is also going great. I love iOS 5 because it has so many new features and because it even looks better. My sister updated her iPhone 4 and iPad 1 too and those are running great too. A friend has the iPhone 4S and the only difference from the 4 is the camera and and Siri. Siri is awesome but i’m not gonna get early into a 2yr contract for it. The 4S is a little quicker but I didn’t use it that much. It was from Sprint so I couldn’t try the HSPA+ speeds but maybe next time I step into te AT&T store i’ll check them.

There are two videos in that post, one being quite a bit funnier than the other. As after all from all the posts the people at Apple stores/geniuses etc are being very helpful to people wanting to exchange to get a “cooler/blue/iPhone 4″ screen color not denying it like the video. I am glad to hear none of the issues in the ilounge review I linked above or the 9to5mac post are popping up to our posters. Both of those links in the post after the video post. Would most people say the ilounge review and 9to5mac post are accurate outside the specific issues that an undetermined amount of purchasers saw? As I pointed out to family just because there are a lot of posts and articles about “yellowgate” doesn’t mean it is truly widespread. The hollow/vibration screen thing seemed really odd as did the camera rattle as that to me seems would have to be isolated issues. If no one here has spotted those or the yellow screen/pictures I am guessing like any new product a few units had issues but got a lot of press.
