iPhone 5 – More Than Just The Phone
Computerworld’s Jonny Evans has posted a wishlist of features he’d like to see in the iPhone 5, and notes that the future of mobile isn’t just about phones, it’s about homes, so be ready.
Evans’s list includes:
• A faster quad-core processor. My take is that it appears unlikely that the iPad 3, rumored to be already in mass production and slated for a March release, will have quad-core A6 power. What I’m deducing from scuttlebutt is that Apple will stick with the A5 CPU for iPad 3, and possibly release an iPhone 4 (or 3S?) in October. At least that’s the timeline the Taiwan-based journal Digitimes is hearing from its insider moles.
Also, CNET’s usually reliable and well-researched Brook Crothers reported recently that analyst Tavis McCourt of the Morgan Keegan investment bank predicted an iPhone 5 for this fall in a research note.
On the other hand, it’s also been recently reported that that the latest iOS 5.1 beta includes updated processing-core management software that not only supports the dual-core processing enabled by the A5 iPhone and iPad chip, but also quad-core processing, so it appears that the software is ready whenever Apple decides it’s time to pull the A6 trigger.
That presents the conundrum of whether Apple would introduce A6 quad-core power to iOS devices in an iPhone. I still think its possible that we’ll see iPhone 5 at Apple’s World Wide Developer Conference in June, but the way the universe is unfolding, that even may be focused on a major MacBook laptop family overhaul announcement, with Intel Ivy Bridge Core i processors and a case redesign for the Pro models.
If that plays out, iPhone 5 could get bumped back to October, a year after the iPhone 4S release, and possibly for a simultaneous rollout with iPad 4/3S. In that instance, I think an A6 chip would be highly likely. If it’s June for the iPhone 5, less so. It’s been ventured that with Asus’s recent release of a quad core Android Tablet it’s unlikely that Apple would let Android tablets get a year out in front before matching the hardware. However, while demand for the dual-core iPhone 4S is reportedly softening somewhat, it’s still selling well, and I don’t think raw processor power is a tier-one concern for most iPhone users, at least yet.
• Wireless charging – Evans notes that Apple already supports wireless sync with iTunes, and maintains that it’s time to enable wireless recharging, as well, along the lines of Mobee Technology’s Magic Feet range of Mac wireless inductive charging peripherals introduced at CES this week. Observing that Apple already holds patents for inductive charging, Evans is hopeful. I’m skeptical for the iPhone 5, but it wouldn’t be a total shocker.
• LTE and NFC support – I’m from Missouri on this one as well. It wouldn’t surprise me greatly if one or the other is part of the iPhone 5 feature set, nor would it if neither is included. It really depends substantially on infrastructure and component issues beyond Apple’s control. When those are resolved to Apple’s satisfaction, I’m confident that we’ll see both LTE and NFC in the iPhone. In 2012? That remains to be seen.
• Better Security – With NFC the iPhone will become an iWallet, which raises a concatenation of new security concerns. Evans says that fortunately, help is coming in the form of a sophisticated security set-up Apple’s been quietly developing, as reported by Patently Apple this week to use a combination of facial recognition, biometrics (potentially) and a split device security reminder system, with development being led by one of Apple’s most senior minds, Bud Tribble.
• Serious Siri – I’ll cop to being something of a Siri skeptic — Luddite if you wish —, as I am about 3D. In either case, is it the shape of the future, or are these technologies novel gimmicks? I think the jury is still out. I detest 3D, but I do use voice input technology a lot as a production tool, such as with Nuance’s excellent and free Dragon Dictation for iPhone and iPad. However, there’s the bandwidth-hogging issue, and having people jabbering search queries and whatnot to their iPhones (and soon iPads as well) in company or public raises the level of digital communications etiquette obnoxiousness by several magnitudes.
That said, I think voice control and input are here to stay, but will they ever dominate? I hope not. However, Evans is confident that eventually we’ll be able to use an iPhone and Siri to control household appliances and integrate with home security systems. He’s probably right, but I wouldn’t look for more than an optimized and enhanced Siri in iPhone 5.
Evans assures us that in a relatively short time Apple won’t just be in your den, it will be all over your home, what he calls “the Machine-To-Machine (M2M) gold rush we’re going to see become a major industry trend this year.” He concedes that it’s a little like the Jetsons or Star Trek, and that from an air traffic control point of view it’s probably still quite a good thing the world’s 7 billion people don’t have jet packs yet, but can’t the same be said of bandwidth-clogging technologies like Siri?
Just sayin’.

MY PREDICTIONS
It will probably be an A6 although I doubt its quad core, if it is an A6 then the iPad 3 will probably get it first so by March we will know for sure about the processor.
The memory will probably be increase so 32gb is entry level and 64 for the more expensive model although they will probably offer they will probably seriously promote iCloud on the new phone ( less onboard memory is more money to Apple )
It will undoubtedly have a new design probably something abit more sleek with a bigger screen which is rumored they did have planned rather than the 4S but Steve Jobs killed it because he wasn’t happy with things like battery life which is one of the reasons we got a long overdue 4S rather than iPhone 5.
The other possibility for a design style is something flexible rather than the traditional rigid phone we are all used to, Samsung will be bringing out a flexible phone in 2012.
Better camera, Siri, wireless Sync although I doubt wireless charging, Apple are good but they are not the best so don’t expect it all.
Probably iWallet but that all comes down to are Apple happy with security
The release date almost certainly the WWDC, the iPhone is their star attraction because it appeals to people of all ages and it doesn’t matter if they have MAC or PC.
They cannot afford another low key affair late in the year, they need to get the iPhone out there because by September / October all the competition will have had their new phones out for many months.
iPad in March and hot on its heels is the iPhone
Their new laptops will also get a makeover this year I imagine the MacbookPro range will be replaced by bigger and more powerful Macbook Air style with a few slight differences to distinguish them from the Air.
The laptops though will probably be out after the iPhone and the iPod getting its traditional September makeover.
Tim Cook has just been made highest paid CEO in America so he is going to have to earn his money and he has to show that Apple can carry on making great stuff even without Steve Jobs.
I would actually be tempted to call the new phone the iPhone 5sj ( steve jobs ) it would be great for marketing if they could try and attach the memory of Steve Jobs to the new phone and it sounds fancier than just iPhone 5

I’m hoping that the iPhone 5 does not get pushed back to October. I’m expecting June and I really hope Tim Cook skips the tongue and the date for incomes out.

@Braden- Yes, a June release is definitely preferred here too. Waiting for another October would be such a drag imo.

My mom doesn’t want to go to android so she is holding out for the iPhone 5, with a 3G. I told her that it would be coming out June and even then
It may come out this October, she was devastated. She is not at all interested into the iPhone 4s. Not only that, what’s the point of getting a phone when I new one will be here in 5 to 6 months, or so we hope. I personally want to wait because as of now I don’t have a smart phone and I want to wait to get the iPhone 5 because A. It saves me money from avoiding the data plan and B. plain and simple, I don’t want an iPhone4s.

I am 50-60% happy with the iPhone 4s currently. Battery life and really wanted a larger screen are taking it’s toll.
Paying 150$ to Verizon for 2 phones, WITH my 22% discount is also annoying. I keep seeing T-mobile ads for 99.99$ per mo for 2 Smartphones with unlimited talk/text/web.
Already called Verizon and asked what Early Termination fees would be, and is under 300$ for each phone.
My wife however does not want to give up her iPhone. Sigh….

I think there its almost certain that the iP5 will be a June release.
The WWDC is the biggest technology event of the year and there is nothing in October and the iPhone & iPad are Apple’s two biggest sellers and as a result of the 4s rather than a new phone in 2011 Apple are playing serious catchup.
The other companies will also have released their new phones long before October and whilst your mom might be willing to wait it out for the new iPhone alot of people won’t because their contract has expired and they want a new phone and there are plenty of Droids out there already some of which knock the socks off the 4S
I know somebody who is like an Apple addict and he liks to upgrade his Apple laptops every couple of years and get the new iPad every year and of course likes to buy the latest iPhone every year from Apple direct unlocked but when the 4S came out rather than the 5 he moved over to the Samsung Galaxy and he says he is never going back to iPhone so if their addicts will desert them then anybody will and so they can’t afford another October release.
I think your mom has nothing to worry about the new iPhone will probably be out in June although personally I love my 16gb iPhone 4 and wouldn’t upgrade at this time unless the iPhone 5 was something really special.

@Brett – “….but when the 4S came out rather than the 5 he moved over to the Samsung Galaxy…”
I did the same. I sold my unlocked iP4 in Sept. for $500. in anticipation for the iP5. Then I decided to purchase an unlocked SGS2 out of disappointment . Had the the iP4S come with a 4 inch (at least), I would have purchased it instead of the SGS2 , no doubt.

just bought my very first iphone last jan 2. so far im very happy with its performance except for its battery problem
i think a 4 inch iphone would be fine but any screen larger than 4 inches is a bit annoying it would look like a samsung or htc smarthphone
even if i saved almost half off my salary for 1 yr i nvr had any regret buying the 4s

Am I right in saying the IP4s has only just been released in China? If so I can’t see the release of the IP5 being June, it’s just not enough time for sales to drop surely?

The iP4s will continue to be sold but as their lower priced model same way they did with the 3GS when the iP4 came out and its what they did to the original iP4 when the 4s came out.
Apple just care about getting their new product on the shelf not worry about who bought the 4s just 8 months earlier and because they are Apple and one of the most desirable brands on the market even if their latest phone is inferior to the competition they can get away with what most companies couldn’t.
