4G LTE Samsung Galaxy Note Guarantees 4G iPad 3, iPhone 5
Posted by Michael Nace on Sunday Feb 12, 2012 Under Android, iPad 3, iPhone 5 Opinion, iPhone 5 PredictionsThe tablet-smartphone Samsung Galaxy Note will debut on February 19th as an AT&T 4G LTE mobile device. This all but assures that Apple will outfit the iPad 3 and iPhone 5 with 4G LTE as well.
Ever since its high-profile Super Bowl television commercial, many tech junkies have been contemplating the Samsung Galaxy Note and what effect, if any, it will have on Appledom. Features such as a sprawling 5.3-inch super AMOLED screen, 1.4GHz Dual Core Processor, and a stowable “smart pen” have all led many to wonder if this could the device that fills the tablet-smartphone gap, and whether Apple might feel obliged to answer it with a smaller “mini iPad.”
But what many are missing is the reality that AT&T is offering the Samsung Galaxy Note in 4G LTE. Take a gander at Best Buy’s product page, and you’ll see that the Galaxy Note is set to debut with the LTE option.
iPhone 5 News Blog reader Ausin brought this to my attention, and suggested how significant it really is. Thanks, Ausin!
What Ausin was getting at is the fact that, with the high profile of the Samsung Galaxy Note and the fact that AT&T is offering it as a 4G LTE device, it is just about the most definitive circumstantial evidence that we can expect both the iPad 3 and iPhone 5 to be LTE as well. While Verizon and Sprint have audaciously sought to roll out their 4G networks, AT&T’s investiture has been lower-profile. And considering that the AT&T network is still considered to be the gold standard network for the iPhone, many feel that their willingness to onboard 4G LTE devices would in large part dictate Apple’s own move into 4G LTE for its mobile devices.
Apple would be hard-pressed to justify passing on 4G LTE for both the iPad 3 and iPhone 5 in 2012, now that the Samsung Galaxy Note will go LTE on AT&T.
Galaxy Note Could Squelch iPad 3, Kindle Fire Sales
It still remains to be seen what sales effects the Galaxy Note will bring into the tablet marketplace. Just as the Kindle Fire is beginning to gain double digit market share and, pardon the pun, catch fire, the Galaxy Note could give users pause. The Galaxy Note’s large-sized screen could inspire users looking for a versatile yet compact tablet reader to re-up on contracts and get a Galaxy Note that consolidates tablet and smartphone into one. Similarly, iPad enthusiasts who are as convinced as we are that Apple will not delve into the sub 9.7-inch screen genre might opt for the Galaxy Note now — or at least keep it in the rear view mirror ahead of the iPad 3′s release this spring.
Finally, will it compete with the iPhone 5?
Many would suggest that it will not, simply because it is a very different kind of mobile device from what the iPhone 5 promises to be. But in a macro sense, the Samsung Galaxy Note may not even threaten the iPad 3 or iPhone 5 specifically, but rather the entire “Apple ecosphere” as a whole. Apple’s new revenue model is to sell the entire fleet of products to the user: desktop, laptop, tablet, and smartphone. But it takes a lot of dough to get all of that great Apple gear and keep it up-to-date. At least with the Samsung Galaxy Note consolidates to some extent the tablet and smartphone.
Of course, it is worth noting that the Samsung Galaxy Note isn’t the first tablet-smartphone crossover. I remember the now defunct Dell Streak 5, which offered a very similar user experience to the Galaxy Note, sans the stylus. The Dell Streak 5 fell flat on its face, in spite of its novelty. For all of the fanfare and interest, will that be the fate of the Galaxy Note as well?

This is going to fall FLAT on its faceplate. My friend has an Andriod that is like 4.6 or something like that. Everyone makes fun of it because it WON’T fit in his pocket (most of the time). He too admits its large size. I can’t imagine what a 5.3″ screen is going to be like. The only way I see something ever being that big and people liking it would be to make a foldable phone. But even then, no one likes those. No I think that the Note is going to fail. A stylus? AGAIN? I thought the world was rid of those, along with everyone else. Guess some people didn’t get the memo.
Michael: Do you know anything about the iPad 3 possible memory? It there any news of letting go of the 16, and making the 32 the new standard and bringing the 128 from now on?

Ty, I have a friend of mine who has the old Dell Streak 5. He loves it, but he’s a doctor, so he keeps it in the big pocket of his lab coat all day.I always tenn him that we unwashed masses don’t have the benefit of wearing a lab coat to work.

Nada, undfeatable. I’ve heard nothing. Granted, I probably don’t follow iPad 3 rumors as rabidly as iPhone 5 rumors, but I keep tabs on all of the major channels, and no one is talking about memory. Basically it’s all about LTE, Siri, display, screen size, and how the form factor won’t change. But you would think that if they really want to push HD, they’ll also want to beef up memory.

Sorry, but this isn’t going to fail. It’s been released in other countries for months now and has been selling very well.
It is certainly NOT for everyone due to it’s large screen size, but for many that’s it’s strongest selling point. I personally think it has an amazing size. It is extremely slim, making it feel much lighter and smaller than its profile shows. The 5.3″ screen looks amazing when browsing, viewing websites, or playing games. After using my girlfriend’s 4.7″ screen, I find it annoying to have to squint and use my own iPhone 3GS. I’m not saying that it’s for everyone, but I think that screen sizes will keep increasing because in general they are much easier to view and not as cumbersome as you’d expect, once you are used to it.
As for the stylus, I don’t understand why everyone is berating it so much. I’m an architecture student and think it would be great to be able to sketch things out quickly on my phone and leave my sketchbook at home. Saves me from carrying one more accessory. If you don’t want to use the stylus, then don’t! Saying that the phone is bad because it comes with a stylus is like disregarding a new car because it has an extra cup-holder. It’s an added luxury to the phone, and doesn’t detract from it’s other features.

I agree with you on the stylus, Darek. Sure, the stylus was something that the iPhone replaced, and so it is seen as outmoded. But I see the idea of having the OPTION of a stylus as a good one. It remains recessed inside the device, and even if you only use it 5% of the time, it isn’t like it’s getting in the way.

Time will tell how well Galaxy Note sold. People buy smart phones they are now even kids and older people, it isn’t attract to them because they live up market trend. but people who knows much about tech it is much more than any other smart phone yet offered that is including iPhones.
I don’t wait to hear iPad3, I Phone5 or Galaxy III.this is it to me because of stylus I can use for my need.

The anti-stylus meme is getting old… don’t these folks get tired of channeling Jobs? I think the its international sales so far will ensure continued stylus development, and perfecting OCR will make it a VERY attractive device.

Even though I’m all for the iPhone, I’m also looking forward for the Galaxy Note. If the next iPhone turns out to be a FLOP (iPhone 4SS anyone?) I will consider getting a Galaxy Note.. The only thing holding me back on Android is all the music and apps I have bought on iTunes and buggy software (So basically everything involving Android OS).

Be still my beating heart… the possibility of an iPadPhone 3? I know I read it wrong, but hope springs eternal, and that LTE will be for data, and not voice, but oh well… I’m still holding out for a 9.7″ smartphone.
@Jamel, you’re unique, just like everyone else!
As for styluses (styli?), they do take some room in the phones, not only for the physical stylus, but for the holder, and the phones are packed pretty tight as it is. I like them, especially for doing remote desktop.

The bigger screen the better, if you ask me. It gives the ability to hide a much larger battery inside the phone.
If I could have a Droid Razr Maxx with iOS, I’d be in heaven. Double the battery size of the current phone + 4.3″ screen. I would give my iPad to the kids.
I would like to see a 1024×768 iPhone resolution. I bet everyone knows why….

People can argue all they want for/against the Note (that we know about) or for/against the iPhone 5 (that no one knows about) all day. The fact of the matter is, we’re just adding to the predictions and wish lists we’d like to see for the iPhone 5. You can’t be happy with a phone if you hype it up to be something it is simply not. If you get everything you wanted all at once, well, what’s left to wait for? Patience is the key here. I’m an iPhone user, but admire technology in general, so I’m saying this from the most unbiased point of view I can. And yes, it does tick me off that I don’t know the iPhone specs in advance, but I still love the phone. And I think android has something pretty cool on their hands with this note. It’s not about completely dominating every corner of the market, no one likes monopolies … good, stiff competition is an excellent driving force of the economy. Apple and Google push each other to do better.

Whoooa…. When did we go to a white background and smaller font? It makes it difficult to read on my iPhone!

Well, if you search around you’ll see that the Note has already been released in Europe and elsewhere, since Q4 2011. Unlike the Streak 5 ( a dud), it’s doing quite well (a success) for itself actually. It’s just a larger SGS2 spec wise, really.

Having followed this site for over a year now whilst waiting for the massive letdown that was the iPhone 4S I took the plunge last month and purchased a Droid phone.
Best thing I have done in a long time. I got myself a HTC Sensation XE with Beats Audio. The phone and the OS is brutally good. Wife has an iPhone 4 with iOS 5. All my previous mobiles had been Nokias of various models.
The HTC Sensation XE is everything I think the replacement for the 4 should have been.
Slim, fast, clear, comfortable to hold and use, etc, etc, etc.
Android is IMHO better than iOS. I even get to use iTunes for music purchasing but syncing across to the best sound system I have had since stacker systems were invented!!!
