iPad 3 Set To Woo Kindle Fire Users
Posted by Michael Nace on Wednesday Feb 22, 2012 Under iPad 3Less expensive tablet devices like the Kindle Fire have attracted users looking to experience mobile tablet computing at a sub $500 price tag. But new findings show that excitement over the iPad 3 will move Kindle Fire users to switch.
One of the stories we’ve been hearing coming out of the tablet scene is that the Kindle, Nook, and other cheaper, small tablets are poised to really make a dent in Apple’s iPad market dominance over the next few years. In spite of the fact that the late Steve Jobs was against the notion that sub-sized and sub-priced tablets were a good idea for Apple, many analysts believe and have reported that the Jobs-less Apple is testing a smaller iPad for down the road, sensing that going smaller and cheaper will become a market necessity. A recent report that the iPad 3 could actually be pricier, thanks to it being Apple’s first 4G LTE tablet, is adding fuel to the fire that the cheaper, smaller Kindle is the tablet design of the future.
And yet, with all that banter in the news, there is evidence that the Kindle folk are gearing up to buy into the iPad 3.
A new article from the Tampa Bay Business Journal reports on a survey that shows a large portion of Kindle users walking away from it, moving towards a more feature-rich iPad 3: “More than half of Amazon.com’s Kindle Fire owners surveyed said they are planning to buy the iPad 3, according to the Silicon Valley/San Jose Business Journal.”
People, that is an astounding figure! And one that must both disturb Amazon and justify Apple, which continues to lead the way with a product-leading tablet that, though not cheap, offers the best value-per-price option out there on the market today.
Interestingly enough, a recent article from SlashGear corroborates this. In the aptly titled article, “iPad 3 Buyers Don’t Care About Price,” writer Chris Davies makes the point: “In a survey run by SlashGear, meanwhile, half of those expressing a strong intention on buying the next-gen iPad – expected to be unveiled in early March – said they planned to do so without consideration of either price or specifications.”
Is this because the iPad is seen as being so novel and necessary in the modern lifestyle that users feel that money is no object? Or, is it simply because savvy mobile users recognize that the iPad is still the best value in the tablet market for the money? Or, is it also because people who bought the Kindle are disappointed that it cannot do what the iPad can do? All three of these are probably accurate to some degree.
But if these surveys prove true, 2012 could be yet another iPad year, with Apple trumping even the impressive iPad 2 sales of 2011.

No one gives a sh*t if you have a kindle… Ohhhh a kindle fire, wow, that guy must be cheap. The iPad is more expensive because it is made better, looks better, and runs better. Im having a radical thought right now. Imagine 20 years ago bringing an iPad and kindle fire to the past. One guy has the kindle, one guy has the iPad. Would the people want to be in an iPad looking future, or a craple fire one?

@undfeatable haha wow that’s exactly what I always think!! Same thing with iPhone or android! I’m sure 99% of the people 20 years ago would chose the iPhone over any android phone out there.

I prefer apple to android but I’ve gotten an open mind to androids recent success against apple. The Samsung gs2 android released last year was on par with my 4s with a 6 month gap between the release dates… Pathetic. The G nexus is just plain a better phone than either of the two but is to big which I don’t like so the iPhone wins until 2013 for me. The kindle v iPad story is a bit sad the kindle isn’t even in the same league as the iPad and does not pretend to be, it’s just reviewers and cheap asses who pretend there is anyway an ebook and media device could compete with a 10 inch ipod touch on steroids. To Apple: release the iPad mini already, revamp iOS it’s boring and make a 4 inch 4g (A6) iPhone 5 already if you don’t hurry up I’m switching. To Android: Fix the damn OS fragmentation only 3 phones have ICS yet you plan on releasing android 5.0? Are you trying to pull an At&t on your customers? And make a good 4g lte phone that isn’t larger than my f*cking hand please.

Why? Now there is no iPad 3 tab.
The new site was amazing, just needed a few improvements, not a downgrade.

Sadly, I don’t have the time, ability, or resources to have a web designer improve the “white” theme — it had to either be good enough right out of the box, or else we would have to go back to the old one. And most folks were complaining about the navigation and layout of the new theme — not just colors and fonts.
undefeatable, I agree: I loved the new theme. to me, blog formats like this one are outmoded. But a large majority of users don’t agree with us.
There is a silver lining: I added the “iPad 3″ tab to the sidebar navigation.

Hi Michael,
I was already getting used to the new site
Anyways, this format of stories (newest one on top and scroll down to see older stories) is more intuitive….this is the way engadget does it and I have grown accustomed to it. I do agree with the other user the white font on the black background is kind of hard to read at times.

There is nothing wrong with old……. I am old.
I had somebody show me their Kindle yesterday, they were really spouting about it. They had bought a case for it that made it ‘feel’ more like a book!
What a waste of money.

It’s funny because there are some newspaper apps that are like those blog shrink wrap formatted websites and I don’t read them anymore because of the navigation issue. To me font and color is not as crucial as ease of navigation. It’s nice to have something where it’s easy to click forward and back and to get around and always know where you are. Not everyone can design a website that’s for sure. It’s like music…most anyone can learn how to play an instrument, but few play them well. And yes, I’m a musician.
